Asking the unmentionable

An impossible question..

The answer is specifically...what do enjoy more than spending time on your boat and does it truly cost less.

Ski and cruise holidays are nice but different. The entry level costs of skiing these days is unbelievable!

Even the boat rental theory (3 F's ) doesn't work as renting means you would have to load all your stuff on board and take it all off at the end...rather than just turn up.

Also, if you were not thinking and preparing for your next trip, what would you do ? ..Would you enjoy planning a ski trip as much as your next boat trip.

The true comparison has to be the entire boat ownership package vs the entire other thing package (not just the doing it bit)

I did a simple cost analysis based on 2 adult's.
Mmm, I do a similar calculation comparing the number of days on board v the equivalent cost of holiday in order to justify the cost of boating but the big cost that we don't take account of is depreciation which tends to be larger than any other cost by far. The fact is that it is not possible to justify the cost of boating in pure monetary terms and the payback has to be measured in the enjoyment and sociability of it.

Every time this question comes up I remember an old man from the 60's telling me, boat ownership is like standing under a freezing cold shower while at the same time setting fire to five pound notes.........and laughing while you're doing so!

same adage today, just change the fiver to a fifty

It is a good job that they don't burn with all that water pouring onto them :p

I tried to go on holiday this Easter but gave up after struggling through multiple web pages to average hotels! The only reason to go away would be to get some sunshine. I usually end up leaving the resort to find the local marina... £10000 would buy two decent family holidays in the sun but the boat gives me so much more as I enjoy all the pottering about, cleaning, chatting with other boat owners etc...
It's a no brainier really..... Keep the boat and sell the kids!

So that's that it then, debate over! :)
I have spent all weekend working on the boat whilst she is out of the water. I ache all over but the satisfaction of a job well done, the promise of the impending season and various chats with fellow boat owners in the yard are what it is all about :)

If I didn't have a boat to pay for, I suspect I wouldn't be that motivated at work.
We don't have kids, no one to leave anything to really, why wouldn't we waste our hard earned on this?
Often the best decisions are not the most sensible ones, we only get one go at this......

I think you may have hit the nail on the head Lisa. I work weekends and then get long holidays so I am lucky in many senses. The boat has always been an escape for Mrs J and I too but I cannot see us driving down on the odd Sat night as we do at the moment to return on Sunday afternoon. I am considering moving the boat to Portishead and have been given great info from Rafiki but I sense that the Bristol Channel is not quite as child friendly for cruises.

I know I want my cake and...!!!

I live in Gloucestershire and I've just moved my boat from the Bristol Channel down to the Solent. I found that it took an hour to get to the boat in the Bristol Channel and then most times the tides or the weather weren't any good for cruising. It took me one hour twenty mins from Glos to Southampton yesterday. Turn the key and off.

For me there's really no contest. It's far more practical to have the boat somewhere that I can go out more or less anytime I want. It's really not that difficult a journey.

I'd agree with that travel time, I assume you're fairly south Glos Andrew?

And there are some pretty good schools in Gloucestershire (Grammars in Cheltenham, Stroud and Gloucester plus decent Comps) so you shouldn't really need to be forking out for school fees.

We aim to spend every weekend aboard between now and October. There are bound to be some exceptions.
Also every holiday is planned around the boat.
Our children are in their 20's .
We do see others with children under 20 who find a full commitment to boating is not achievable.

Thanks to all for their thoughts. It has reminded me why the boat is so important. As the above is such a big part of ownership.

Blimey, I live near Cribbs Causeway and struggle to get to the Hamble in less than 1.45

Ah, didn't read this post, still 1.30 is pretty good going. Takes me the best part of an hour to get to my office in South Cerny in the morning, maybe 45mins during school holidays
