Help please, am trying to identify the artifical teak decking as applied to some of the Samphire range. Looks a bit like a wood grain fablon encased in resin, with mastic paying lines applied on top. Makers information or any info re re-furbishment gratefully received.

This is almost certainly the same stuff which South Hants Engineering (SHE) used on the She range
under the trademark, Shedeck. It looked good when new but when worn, the fact that it was a plastic laminate became painfully obvious. As far as I am aware there is no way to refurbish the original and it is not made any more. The alternative is to start again with a proper teak deck or one of the proprietry DIY decking materials.

Thanks James, O fount of all knowledge, I knew I'd seen it before somewhere.
Haven't seen Sweet Lucy in the Solent for a while, perhaps you have a new and secret mooring somewhere away from rip-off Britain!!

Best wishes, Phil Voodoo

Hi,

There is a product still made that actually won an award at METS 2001. I have seen it and I was fooled even while holding the sample in my hands! Don't know about longevity, but give them a call.

Another thing about Flexiteek

It's fibrous, not laminated, so even when it wears down the appearance of the surface doesn't change. And it really does look like teak!

If it is flexiteek then it really good. It is made from a UV proof plastic polymer that (just like real wood) has the same colour all the way through, so when it gets dirty or worn, you can just sand it back to a grain. It locks together just like that fake laminate flooring you can buy, so it it is really easy to fit, and they even make king, edging and corner planks so you can get the perfect finish.

As for longevity, Golden Arrow Marine in Poole have had their doorway paved in it for just over a year now and even though they are based right on poole quay, have had fish, vomit and dog faeces left on it, it hasn't needed sanding yet, just quite a few washes! So it really can stand the footware test.

By the way, i'm not getting paid for this, i used to work for golden arrow, and liked the stuff so much that i decided to fit it to my rib - 8 months and going well.

If you want to know more about flexiteek you can contact golden arrow marine in southampton or poole - they are the uk distributors.
