'Arthritis'

You have my sympathy! I haven't seen my boat in ages as I have been plagued by gout and sciatica this year. I reckon I would be alright afloat, so long as I am not single-handed, but launching a dinghy off the beach and squirming around to keep low is beyong me. Let's hope next year is better.

I'd really thought to flag up a 'caveat emptor' for those still to visit the wooden boat park at SIBS....

...and was probably just a tad too unspecific. :o

"Walk ( past ) softly and carry a big stick...."

:(

My wife had, and still suffers from arthritus. Her fingers were useless as they curled inwards. She decided to take hemp seed oil tablets. After 4weeks her fingers started to straighten, and now she has the full use of her hands. She still takes the tablets. Doesn't work for every one tnough

My friend had great success with doxcycline for osteoarthritus

Before the treatment with doxcycline he could not clench hands to hold tools, now years later still has excellent use of hands and fingers. Does have the side effect of making one sensitive to sunlight while taking the tablets.

Worked for my friend.

This is very interesting. There are researchers who believe that most cases of inflammation start with an infection. The immune reaction can make things worse.

My mildly swollen joints recovered when I took natural herbs & spices for a different infection. However, infections are very adaptable and can become resistant to any agent.

Do you think they deliberately positioned themselves in the wooden boat area?
Perhaps we should run a poll to find out if a higher % of wooden boat owners have arthritis?
Perhaps it is the human form of woodworm or dryrot?

Anyway, good to see Force 4 and Marine Superstore were busier than the Arthur..itus booth!

Back to arthritis, this is a terrible disease, I know several very good lifelong sailors who have had to give up because of it.

At the Hawker / BAe airfield I worked at, the best most experienced aircraft fitters, all super-skilled blokes, were usually in the 'Experimental' trials aircraft hangar.

Most of these guys were approaching 60 after a lifetime hard dextrous work inside awkward spaces working on fighter aircraft bits and pieces, usually very inaccessible through tiny panels.

Of the 30 or so, from memory there were only about 6 who didn't have severe near crippling arthritis of the hands, often knees too.

Very cruel to go for the things they were best with, the hands.

I have passed on the tips at the beginning of this thread just in case it helps, thanks.

More tips on natural remedies would be a great help. My wife suffers badly from it.:o

Second that. My wife who is 45 was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis 6 months ago. She is a teacher and can hardly write of stand up sometimes (on her feet 10 hours a day!). The nasty drugs (Methotrexate) they have put her on have been increased in strength  so any natural remedies would be greatly appreciated...

A recent reference to our Spanish sourced Aloe Vera based frio calor pain gel:

Good morning Lizzie,
thank you very much for the gel, i must admit i was very very sceptical but i thought to myself what do i have to lose give it a chance, similar products did nothing.
I have been suffering sciatic pain in my leg for well over 3 months now coming from my back and hip and after having expensive physio treatment nothing has progressed so both doctor and physiotherapist have both agreed that further investigation is required i.e, MRI scan.
Having received your Pain gel within 4 days the sciatic pain in my lower leg has now gone, this was the most annoying one. The niggling part is now my lower back that i know is damaged and i will continue to use your gel until such times that i feel more comfortable or whatever happens.
I do now believe that the relief i have been given has been through the use of Spanish Aloe vera gel from yourselves.

.....and it can work for gout, arthritis, and other pain symptoms.

Just caught sight of this thread, my kids have been telling me to face it, what with age & arthritis and being an almost full-time carer apart from 8 hrs per week, time to pack it in.
Today went in the inflatable to the boat to do a job or two, came back to the slipway, couldn't hop out, knees gave out, ended up in the 'oggin and being hauled out - almost dried out! Looks like lone visits are out now - a bitter pill to swallow!

Looks like becoming a sad old gits sorry for ourselves thread. :(

Three months ago we had to give up bluewater cruising after many years because SWMBO's arm stopped working due to osteoarthritis. It came on quite suddenly. The good news is that after a shoulder replacement she has regained much more mobility than expected, so we can at least sail together again. The bad news is now her knees are going ...

Two years ago I was dreading a charter in the Grenadines because I didn't think the pain in my knees would stand the flight. Dr had diagnosed osteoarthritis and prescribed pain killers.
My wife went to see a herbalist in Oakham on my behalf and she prescribed Devils Claw tincture. She said that for every year I'd had the problem (about two years) it would take a month to notice the difference. The pain had gone completely before we flew three months after I started taking it!
Five drops, in water, twice a day. Changed my life.

I am 46 and was diagnosed with ra a year ago.

Dreadful disease. I am on methotrixate also 17.5 mg per week and 10 mg predlinisone per day. By taking methotrixate 10 mg then next day 7.5 the symptoms and tiredness are still bad but much much better.
