Are you allowed to sleep in your boatyard?

How did he know you were on board?

What time did he come around?

.

a ship came in at about ten so he was in the yard to tie up the pilot boat

so he climbed my ladder at about 10.30

I could have claimed that I was just finishing off - I was actually looking at the electrics and trying to make sense of them

but I am truly terrible liar

Sleeping on the boat is far better than sleeping in the car, and you don't have that many nights to do - so knowing the bloke is looking out for signs of activity, go to sleep when it's dark and don't show any.

Of course, having written to the Harbour Master you have probably forced someone to pay attention...

by being caught I had already attracted their attention

so they will be on the lookout now

I emailed the Harbour master to apologise and in the hope that the man with the beard was overstepping the mark

but I doubt it

I am sure that sleeping aboard is not allowed

still not sure what harm I am doing

but I went to a boarding school where we had to wear shorts until we were 14, you were not allowed to make toast until you were 16, only prefects were allowed to walk on the grass and lights went out at 8.45 - even in the summer when the sun had hardly set so I am used to rules that make very little sense

Sounds a lot like my school ;-)

I taught in a boarding school (secondary) for 20 years and in many ways regret not having that privilege myself in my

own school days, despite the many disadvantages of some sort of home life term time.

Many good stories, especially of some of the antics the boys got up to and some of the staff responses. :)

I think the yard is on weak ground and I doubt they can do much to you if you carried on sleeping overnight. Certainly it is impossible for them to prove you are there overnight if you stay schtum unless they operate a full scale surveillance of you - and that seems unlikely. You only need a short time to complete the work & clear off.

I hated the relentless attention to rules, standing in line, **** food, no escape from the bullies, no freedom to read when you wanted to, the smell, squeeky floors, shared showers, - the only salvation was six enterprises, eight cadets and a Wayfarer.

I did not send my own son - I really enjoyed the company of my son between the ages of 11 and 18. I saw him grow from a boy into a man - went from being a bumbling kid in a mirror to an competent big fleet and team racing sailor

As for sneaking onto the boat - that would be naughty

What is the point of a life without some naughtiness?

Dylan,

If the boat is in a yard, I could understand the manager being worried about the insurance angle and maybe sleep-aboards setting fire to the place with dodgy heaters, but surely it's unusual for a Harbour Master to be involved ?

If she is in a yard and it was the HM bothering you, I'd check whether he has any jurisdiction at all or is just trying to convince himself he's god of ' his ' harbour...

the yard belongs to the harbour board - it has their workshop in there and six other yachts

so it is certainly their jurisdiction

it is not the end of the world.... just inconvenient is all

£25 a night in the Arran View doesn't seem too shabby; nice warm room, Cosy bed, hot bath, pub downstairs, and a cooked full English breakfast in the morning !

C'mon man take the plunge......

Sleep in the car in this weather and you're going to feel like sh*te in the morning.

Go crazy...go ahead and book that room!

Edit: sorry just read WestWittering's post......I'll get me coat !

stay on board, hide the ca,r lights out keep your head down till boats finished

The trouble is he has been told he cannot sleep on board in the yard.

If he gets caught again, esp if its written in the small print he did not read, he is in trouble.

Going to look a fool if they ban completely ban him from the yard and tell him to get the boat shifted somewhere else without delay.

correct as usual Vic

rules is rules

as sailors we should always assume they are there for a good reason and obey them

It is not an ordinary boat yard - it is where they keep their stuff - so odd blokes on boats at night is not good

for the nights I was there I kept quietly to my boat - the curtains were drawn but the lights were on

so I was not exactly hiding - although after dark I hardly left the boat

And of course people at the yard may have some time to kill and are dossing about on YBW.....

'Oi Beardy, that homeless bloke with the Centaur is a journalist apparently....'

If you wanted to be a bit awkward you could just defy the rules. To get you shifted they would have to get a court order which would be expensive and take ages by which time you would be out be there anyway. Trespass is a civil offence so the law could do nothing without a court order, the police would have no authority to evict you. Providing you do no damage there is nothing they could do in the short term. Be civil and polite, which I am sure you are but stand your ground and they will realise that they ought to just leave you alone. Good luck with the project.

better to comply with their wishes imho

does anyone have an empty boat nearby with lekky I could sleep on

I will bring my own mattress, sleeping bag and fan heater

I will not eat on your boat

anything that will save me the journey home or a night in a car

one dvd for each night

You are quite right but the rub is that bearded man can / will make life uncomfortable. Banging on the hull at 01.00 etc, etc. better than sleeping in a Micra though!

Sleep on board whether ashore or afloat during the winter as required. Many of the boats at owned by locals so not many sleep on board. There may be a rule but people around does inprove security.
