Re: Monopoly Are we being screwed by marinas?

Well said. If an issue is not pushed it does not deserve to be taken seriously.

I would never wish to cause job losses or firms to go bankrupt but more choice and costs nearer to those like in Granton Marina, operated by a club who seem to be better than most at managing their berthing affairs would be a step in the right direction.

According to george Taylor (who used to edit PBO) the 'Property' firms moved into marina business as they saw positive gains to be made. If however the marina & secure berthing business became a little less attractive we may see different values emerge.

Re: Back to my old favorite

Cowes Yacht Haven. The staff tell me that they are owned by a trust, which smacks of non profit making, but this must wrong.

It appears to this user to have the highest charging lowest reinvestment ratio on the Solent.

On Wednesday night the charge, with electric, for an 8m boat with electrics was £17.40.

I recently stopped berthing a 9.1M at MDL as it was "measured" as 9.3M despite no overhangs outside the hull that could possibly have caused its length to grow, and particularly as it would have cost over £3000 to do so.
In Spain I moor a 12.5M boat in a 12M berth (provided by the marine staff I hasten to add) and pay only £2150. And I get free sunshine. As with everything in this country, yes we are being screwed by the marina operators!!

Ah But!!!!
I keep mine in a gloriously sheltered marina, Excellent security, 24 access (no lock), on site workshop, cafe and bar. Friendly professional staff
Great showers, laundrette, free parking, free water & cheap shore power.
Easy access to sheltered, quiet sandy beaches and pubs with free jettys.
All at half the cost of a South coast marina.
And it's in the UK....

Am I saying where..........Not likely!!!!!!

With the present Government presiding over average Council Tax hikes of 12% for the next year, why on earth would they be interested in protecting "wealthy" boat owners from marina price increases running above the inflation rate??

I have a 9.3m boat and pay (I hope you are all sitting down) £130 a year including water and electricity. Pontoon birth with "jetty both side of the boat". No flashy clubhouse though. We have a shower and toilets but they are only open April through September.
Everyone is asking where, is there a waitig list. The answer is Outer Oslo Fjord Norway and no.
One problem though £5.50 a pint and £30 for a bottle of scotch. But I think you would be drunk perminantly for £3000 a year even at these prises. Ryan air is only £25 from the UK and 20 mins from the airport...!!

Re: Poor Britons? Adam Smith rules OK

Hey tcm, since when does expensive car, big house etc mean "rich?" I thought net worth (assets-liabilities) is the measure of wealth. In any case, there's a very big difference between "rich" and "wealthy." To what extent is Britain going the way of the US with a high level of personal debt?
Sorry for the late reply, but I couldn't, even if I wanted to, find the time to be on all the forums all of the time, and I'm retired/forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

Did you happen to notice how many 'reasons' DavidM managed to list in his 3 posts defending high marina charges?

Am I a cynic, or could DavidM possibly be someone with a very large vested interested at the top of the Hamble?

David *****?
