Are Volvo Penta in the real world

In the real world he wasn't that bad a bloke, did you meet him Fred?

Yes, did meet him and went for a quick run out on his first boat which he had bought after spotting it at some boat show or other , might have been a Crunchi. Seem to remember the boat had the build quality of Cornflake packet.
A very engaging chap and with a very nice wife and small child but with one or two minor problems which may have had something to do with his time in the military.
Classic first time purchase, brand new tent boat, petrol and outdrive, had a few teething problems with it, one of which was the petrol fuel tank let go dumping a full tank of fuel into the bilges.Either him or his missus had the income or influence to persuade the builder of his boat to provide him with a brand new slightly better version of his boat but this time with diesel.
Whatever replacement was, when like poo off a spade, seem to remember something like 40knots out of it.
Think he got banned from forum twice and then disappeared off round into the Solent Triangle never to appear again.

Yep, remember the petrol in the bilge event, he left Cuxton in his new boat after a visit, flat out from a standstill causing all sorts of mayhem on the pontoons.

Pretty sure Pete had difficulty comprehending social situations, could make you flinch or smile depending on circumstances.:)
Bad enough in a live group, impossible on Forum, hence some posts .

Iirc posting a graphic photo of someone with half their head shot away was the last straw. He isn’t missed.

Did you read the thread
I fully understand why you find that hard to believe, but actually I did - see also my post #58.
Funny you should mention it though, because I often wonder the same for yourself, your own posts included...

You shouldn't indulge in falling asleep reading my posts.
You have a job to do, as rubberduck already reminded you!

I can see why a car engine tuner can be skeptic about the usefulness of such alarms, but I would think that big diesels really are in a different league.
After all, with the typical intermittent usage of pleasure boats, I suspect that during their lifespan these engines run completely dry (upon cold start) for much longer than it would take to turn them off after a pressure alarm goes off.
And for most engine components, it still takes a while before they are starved of oil, after the pressure drop is sensed by a properly placed bulb.
Anyway, I'm just thinking out loud, and I'd be curious to hear the view of our resident diesel engines experts.

I’d like to hear from resident experts too. Looking at Volvo’s data for the D13 1000hp, the maximum combustion pressure at 600 rpm is 1997 psi, at 2000 rpm cruise it’s 3433 psi.

The difference is not as big as I expected, only 70% more combustion pressure despite that motor running nearly 4 bar boost at 2000 rpm. Perhaps it’s the rpms that will do the majority of the damage.

BMWs, my favourite topic...

got an X3, cylhead gasket gone, drinking oil and after a while water, lots of both.
never bother checking dipsticks or anything, got some lovely warning lights on the dash, when the oil level one is on, you need a lt of oil (give or take, don't even bother measuring, just dump it in and move on), same with coolant, awful thing. Cannot imagine the X5 not to have such warning lights tbh.

and to be on topic, no I never bother checking dipstick and coolant level on my engines, well once at the start of the season after servicing. But I do visit the e/r regularly to check for leaks (of any type) dust from belts (haven't changed any over the last 3-4yrs) and anything looking odd.

V.

Oooh, head gasket - have fun with that! Do you have the 6cyl version? Nasty job if so - big engine for that engine bay..

Yeah, the X5 has an Amber oil level warning and red oil pressure warning. Both test on start up, and appear to work. Didn’t warn me when it really mattered though!

Good luck with the car :)

Sorry, but completely forgot about that very unfortunate event, was fortunate enough to come on line only after the posting had been pulled by moderators.
Fred.

I think your comments here regarding Volvopaul are slightly wide of the mark. Paul is amongst the most respected of professional contributors on here, and despite his forum name he is completely independent of Volvo Penta. Your banter generally is one thing I personally like, but making your comments more personal is considerably less attractive.

+1 If I had to count up the amount of free advice I have had from Paul over the years (not to say some excellent servicing work) …. well you get the idea.
