Are UK marinas too small?

I think that it's unrealistic (nay impossible) to expect every marina / port of whatever size to cater for all boats of whatever size. As others have said it's just a matter of passage planning. At 62' Loa / 8'8" draught we have never had a problem in the UK, have always found a berth, and have never been turned away / been forced to anchor. Spain and Portugal for example are much more restricted.

Re: Before you build at Portpatrick...

Smeaton developed the joddle-and-trenail construction method for the Eddystone lighthouse. It worked there, and failed at Portpatrick. If you walk out along the remains of the south breakwater you can see the recesses (for the joddles) and holes (for the trenails) in the wreckage.

Sailing around the med it seems common to have 50ft+ spaces, bigger yachts there seem to be common. Perhaps it is just the weather working as a magnet for welthier people. The UK perhaps has does not have the same requirements, and I prefer it like this because sailing here is conceived and perceived more as a sport and a hobby than a luxury.

there will always be expensive marina, maybe a suggestion is to only have those who hold a qualification via the RYA. i am thinking outside the box, as it does not need to be as expensive as it is. bring it back to reality. to moor your boat oalongside a piece of wood should not cost £4kpa. i dont see the value. ( welcome to boating) i would just like to see where my money is being spent. or am i being unrealistic

£4k pa? You haven't visited the Hamble, have you? :-)

Maby,
i was trying to find an rough average, i was quoted 7.2k

That sounds low to me as an average. We've been thinking of moving round there and the lowest price I could find for a 43 footer is around £7k - not hard to find places charging over £10k!

I do wonder if this is going to drop - I think they are having some difficulty staying full - nobody has yet told me that they don't have room for us.

I am currently in Brixham harbour, and pay under 2K for a swing mooring, i am a member of a yacht club so i can you parking ect. also the HC has a pontoon with water and electric, where you can use, and if you have a mooring it is minimal costs

It's horses for courses really, isn't it? Brixham is a lovely place and a swinging mooring is fine for occasional leisure use. On the other hand, it is a long way from London and a swinging mooring is a real pain at times. My wife and I work in London and spend long periods on the boat - the Hamble is under two hours to Victoria. Crossing from the boat on a swinging mooring to the shore wearing a business suit in a dinghy is not very practical either!

very true, i was in Poole for a while, and it was 2:30mins by car, now it is 1:30. to Marina, get change in carpark when very dark, row or engine to boat, pleasant feeling open first beer when arrived at night, knowing your off sailing the next day. cant beat it, cant wait until next weekend 4 day sail on its way. i may get a day sail this weekend, but M5 very busy this time of year, so timing has to be perfect.
