Are the adverts making this forum unusable

Ads pay for and ensure the future enjoyment of this forum but please not right slap bang in the middle of the posts !
When you are at the far end of a weedy bit of copper cable and speeds are best described as "glacial",it is a pain..

You and lots and lots of other people across the various forums and threads in the last couple of weeks - and that's ignoring the members who just did it without announcing the fact, and the lurkers who can read and follow the adblocker advice but not post to say that they have.

Most of these people will not be disabling the adblocker if and when the adverts get dialled back to more sensible proportions (they may not even be aware).

Foot, meet gun.

I agree.
I was getting so frustrated that I had started to visit the forum less frequently, which I haven't consciously done since I joined way back in 2002.

The YBW Forums have always been slow to load over the last 15 years or so.

I keep meaning to bring the stopwatch back from the boat to estimate how much of my life is wasted waiting for the top advert to load, the advert on the top right to load, the YBW "not" news to load again, then boats for sale then the bloody annoying advert in the middle of the threads.

So then having studiously ignored the irrelevant advert for L'Occitaine or whatever when you open a thread it bloody starts the excruciatingly slow load of irrelevant adverts all over again, and when you go back to the main Mobo or Lounge page etc it wastes your life again.

on main pages, Motor Boats or lounge etc, I recognise they need to cover costs. Speed up the load of adverts, keep them relevant, remove the one in the middle of the threads on the main page, remove YBW news and boats for sale.

On threads, keep it to one quick advert, remove the YBW news, boats for sale and centre thread advert or you will lose forumites because they have better things to do with their time than waste it like this.

After spending over 2 hours trying to get an ad blocker to work I have given up, can anyone please let me know what one will work on an iPad ? Have done updates and in App Store I select for iPad, try to install and keep getting the message not compatible with device, not sure why. My super fast BT infinity is s*** and with adds trying to load as well it's painfully slow, I get better speed with 3G when out and about.

o

Just installed "ad blocker for I-devices" via App Store; works well. Additional ads look like a bit of an own goal.

I've worked with IT since the days of DOS and CPM and watched the internet unfold. Whilst I have encountered adblockers on various customer PCs etc, I've always used a script blocker in preference as this blocks code not test/graphical content. I strongly believe that browsers should ALL block 3rd party scripts by default and offer an opt-in prompt to allow content - but doubt that will ever happen now. Some news websites, as referred to above, use content from 20 or more domains and I for one don't believe they vet all (if any) of those sites. More importantly, they have no control over what is served - thus I block it until I've determined a little more about the domain, if it's necessary for the page being loaded and what they provide. More Malware is spread via browser than any other means currently and whilst I might be content / trusting enough to let YBW run scripts, I'm not about to trust A N Other on their say so. Any domain that pushes audio or video content without a click also gets blocked at firewall - and thereby from every device in the house. Suffice to say, I only ever see static ads and not many of those...

What version of iOS are you on? I believe the ability to use an ad-blocker in the native browser only came in very recently, so if you haven't upgraded (which is different to installing normal updates for your current version) then you may not have that feature.

(An upgrade is free and happens over the network; look in the Settings app to see if there's one available.)

Just installed Adblock for £1.49 on phone and iPad. ( one fee covers both). Seems to do the job.

Never bothered before as used to just ignore adds generally but these were so intrusive. Very happy !

Thanks all for the advise, I have iOS 9.1 and all the ad blockers I have tried to install have said not compatible with this device.

The forum has been the slowest for me today since I joined and I've accessed from my high speed connection at work. The page is sat for a number of seconds while the L'Occitane banner loads, I'm not an internet/web techy person but certainly seems like that animated banner is slowing the crap out of page loads today!

I agree, its painfully slow on my ipad and PC, probrably why there's been very little input on here in the last few days, the Sealine forum is a much better example, ybw could learn a lot from it.

I was lucky enough to get Peace the last day it was available for iPad, it doubled the page load speed at least. I also got NeverAds for more settings. It's not just ads you can block but tracking and user data theft.
