I can understand YBW need to fund this site form adverts, and can put up with the top banner, clearly tailored to my google click history, and even the right side banner which is OK on my laptop, and takes up nearly half the screen on my iPad, I ca live with.

BUT as I turn on today another (swear word withheld) banner now appears right in the middle of the thread lists.

Back off Time Life - we do need some screen space for the forum itself surely !

I need to reinstall Adblock ( or install Stylish) after my switch to Windows 10 ( which is OK).

if you thing this forum is bad re adverts, try the daily post website ( a newspaper site covering North Wales); I don't bother going there anymore, totally inundated with ads and disguised areas on the screen that take you to ads if you hover over them.

Stylish isn't working well on it's own even with DaveRo's add-on, i keep getting the middle of the screen ad, un-paused Adblock and all is well with both running.

Forum browsing, particularly when contributing whilst aboard, is a bandwidth challenge for many. Forgetting just for a moment that forum content (bye and large) constitutes a free and broad content resource and QA service to the publisher, known to wonder off course from Time to time (no pun intended), increasing that already excessive download overhead is wholly selfish. Just IMHO, of course.

I had never heard of Adblock ( now Adblock Plus ) so have installed it. Fantastic, I am no longer having to wait for excess junk to download so I can now use a page much quicker. Thanks to the OP for starting this thread and the very useful replies.

Thought that the ad in the middle of the screen was an aberration related solely to the ever decreasing performance of my iPad. I am now wondering whether the whole adverts thing is at the heart of the problem.

To answer the OP's original question a resounding 'YES!'

Running a forum is not a costly exercise.

I also bet that if a survey was taken then we'd see that the vast majority of forum members subscribe (or purchase) at least one of the Time publications on a regular basis. (I subscribe to 3).

In addition Time gathers excellent data and content from the thread we all post; and it uses that content as contributions to many of its publications. That's has some significant business value to Time.

So with all the above in mind, I think we have all paid ours dues and as a consequence it should be a "free" service, without overly intrusive advertising. The new advertising placement is FAR from being unintrusive!!

Time, please, start playing fair and give your valued customers a positive experience of using your services, rather than focusing on revenue generation. If you continue to weaken the experience of the forum, then many will become disillusioned and use another service.

I can live with advertising to a point. The auto-playing videos and audio do my head in. What worries me more is are the adverts vetted for mal and spyware, privacy, shared with 3rd parties etc? I don't like being stalked by some anonymous "Big Brother". What next? If I browse this website on my mobile phone will I get a text based on my location history of the latest offer on a Danforth 16kg anchor when next I pass my local chandlery? Too much :(
