Are the adverts making this forum unusable

Don't sing the praises of Adblock too much - some sites are beginning to employ Adblock blockers or are even banning users that employ it...

The ad-blocking providers have been trying to address this with a middle-ground of "acceptable ads". They have a mode in which advertising that complies with their standard (sensible placing on the page, no audio and video, a limit to the total amount per page, etc) will be allowed through, but if the publishers start getting overexcited with intrusive junk, it gets blocked.

I think a lot of folk here would be happy with that approach.

I'm still toying with the idea of a proxy running in AWS that can completely rearrange the content to my requirements, but it would be a lot of work and I already have a personal dev project on the go :)

(For the record, I don't currently use any ad-blocker or restyling browser plugin.)

I'm assuming Time Inc are paid to display the advert on their site - so whether we users of the site actually see the advert or not, doesn't affect their/Time's income???

I guess longer term if we all start using AdBlock (or similar) then the advertisers are going to start moaning at the lack of people tapping through - but does anyone actually tap through on the adverts on the forum anyway???

They're normally paid according to the number of times it's shown, and I think the way ad blockers work mean that ad-blocked users don't count towards those figures. So Time send you the page, but don't get paid their fraction of a penny for the ads.

Here's a quick analytic to put it into scale. I've been browsing this and one other forum on and off today.
On YBW 16% of the downloaded content is ad related, not so bad...
In answering this thread alone I'm connecting to 13 other domains,
blocked 1,044 ads since this morning.

On FB considered a data miner by many it was 1% and 3 other domains on the newsfeed page

Tell me it's not OTT :(

Been doing similar checks....... This is way OTT... I am usually not too vocal, but this is gradually getting un-usable and definitely an intrusion....

I participate here as I subscribe to MB&Y and felt I could give some experienced value back in my contributions, but not willing to do so under these circumstances...

My answer is simple....... The annual subscription to MB&Y will not be renewed when due in December...

I can understand YBW need to fund this site form adverts, and can put up with the top banner, clearly tailored to my google click history, and even the right side banner which is OK on my laptop, and takes up nearly half the screen on my iPad, I ca live with.

BUT as I turn on today another (swear word withheld) banner now appears right in the middle of the thread lists.

Back off Time Life - we do need some screen space for the forum itself surely !

great thread thanks for posting this- I was wondering if it was just my machine and YES this is just too far. I don't have adblock or whatever so I have to live with this but to be frank its so annoying I am thinking of sacking this site off. IPC/mods I don't want to do this so PLEASE get rid of all this advert stuff

Just to let you know that I hear what you are saying and will discuss it with the boss when he's back next week.

I can't make any promises as we are a media business operating in a challenging environment that needs to find new ways of making money. Wherever possible we try to make sure that comes from advertisers rather than end users but if a new initiative proves counter-productive then clearly we will have to change it. In the meantime please bear with us and I'll see what I can do.

Well done, in all seriousness why does no one at least have a chat with someone like Nathan?

Fair enough Hugo.
I don't want to over egg things but I have been having significant problems with the iPad when browsing the Internet and in particular looking at this site. Long story short this thread prompted me to try ad blocker plus today and it has transformed things. As a consequence I will still be dropping in regularly :)
Cheers

Long story short this thread prompted me to try ad blocker plus today

You and lots and lots of other people across the various forums and threads in the last couple of weeks - and that's ignoring the members who just did it without announcing the fact, and the lurkers who can read and follow the adblocker advice but not post to say that they have.

Most of these people will not be disabling the adblocker if and when the adverts get dialled back to more sensible proportions (they may not even be aware).

Foot, meet gun.

It really shouldnt need a thread like this. Ad blocking should be blatantly obvious by comparing page hits to ad hits. From a purely revenue point of view (which is the duty of any business) then make a change and watch the figures, if revenue goes up keep it, otherwise revert. If the business wants to get all fancy they might consider asking people.
