Are sailors standards of behaviour declining

We had a similar experience at the entrance to Sanda last August. There were only 2 other boats anchored- so nominally plenty of space. We throttled back , planning to go in as far as we could - and leave plenty of space behind us. The other boat (Swiss flag) charged across our bow with their engine going flat out. They then proceeded to drop their anchor in a position neatly blocking up both available spaces. Thoughtless behaviour. We anchored off in deeper than usual water. I think that sort of performance is much of what the OP was objecting to.

Just out of interest, that Swiss flagged boat wasn't chartered locally by any chance?

Perhaps , but I am of the general opinion "do unto others as you would have done to you" The alternative is a free-for all of gross selfishness and no manners....

Seconded.

That we have to “compete” (see above) in a cruising sailing environment is “gross” in itself.

I agree with you - he clearly was trying to beat you to the anchor spot - as I would have done too - in crowded anchorages I've learned it's a race that you either compete in or lose.

Thats awful. Sailing is supposed to be fun not a day of in-the-office aggro.....

we have been carved up in small boats by bigger yachts and mobos on the solent so many times we dont even get wound up about it any more.
But then again, we now have a kayak, and a copy of Cockleshell Heroes, so we may sneak out with a limpet mine or two of a night Riverhogs beware.

This is a far, far better account (unsurprisingly given the author's pedigree and the additional resources that have come to light over time): https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009AW0BL2/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

Exactly,
If people want to race - whether to a mark or an anchoring spot - they should take their ensign down and stick a number on their sides then we all know what they are at.

Unfortunately because there are a few that like to race to a spot and look back with some smug satisfaction , it drags the rest of us to compete , like it was some challenge , must be a testosterone thing, I have learnt through many years to fight this feeling and turn it into humour and really does it affect me ,to much else to worry about , like whats for dinner.

I just go somewhere else....Scotland is blessed with many anchorages. I’ve no desire to share an anchorage with folk who feel the need to consider only their own needs, generally after sharing some surplus fresh mackerel we then make new friends over a wee dram.....no good having earlier felt anger and angst with your anchored neighbours...

What's wrong with a bit of up close and personal with a boat full of strangers?
