Are no moorings available on the Sath Coast

Re: Lagos

A few people think Lagos is steep, and a lot of them are talking with their feet.
We dont have a waiting list at all.

Re: Muddy creek

Could be Littlehampton. We kept a triple keeler there a few years ago and it has odd muddy offshoots five minutes from the entrance near the old Hillyard yard. It was either mudberths there or moorings (or was it piles?) in the river.

It made for a great dinghy ride up the river to Arundel as well.

In general you pay your money and take your choice. I enjoy saving money on the mooring and investing it in new sails etc. That way I get more pleasure from the boat doing with it what should be done (sailing). Yes marinas are nice at times but it can be a high price to pay for a relatively small gain (in my case). Others will say the money is worth it and the must think it worth the extra or they would choose otherwise.

I did have a conversation in the boat club in Wexford with a couple of guys who had sailed over from Milford Marina. When I asked them why they payed so much for marina berths so far up that damn river, when Dale is a beautiful tranquil mooring right near the mouth?

His answer was that his wife outright refused to get in a dinghy, so the only way he could get her to sail with him was to pay up for a pontoon. Fair enough.

Luckily my girlyfriend is very practical and has no quarms muckin in and going by dinghy.

Fair enough if you want the wife or girlfriend to go sailing. Mine likes me to go sailing so she has the house to herself, choice of mooring is therefore down to me. I do find the mooring much less fuss with a simple line to make fast (chain actually) and no fenders etc. Also find sailing on and off a lot easier!

Re: Local moorings alert!

Many village moorings on rivers are let, mostly to locals, at a fraction of the rate commanded for identical facilities operated by marinas. This is a local subsidy, originally to help fishermen, but now mainly used by pleasure boat owners and I can't see it lasting much longer. When you look at the problems being caused by the government's annual grant system (2004/5 grants announced this week) and the withdrawal of discounts to second home owners etc you can hear the pips squeak. I reckon it's not long before village moorings go the way of all mooring prices! Enjoy while you may, I say.
