we're planning to sail the Med and E African coast to Madagasca. Which (coastal) archaeological sites of the area can be most recommended? Particular interests are pre-historic and classical eras.

cheers

An absolute bunch of them in most Meddy countries and north africa, east coast of Africa must also have a bunch, but not sure, be careful at the bottom of the red sea though! I would think of buying a few books about it were I you, the time life series of ancient civilisations would be a start.

Sod all really on the E coast of Africa. Red sea not renowned for such things, nothing comes to mind in Sudan, do Eritrea though some stunning stuff inland by several hundred miles in Axum and Lalibela (both Ethiopia). Nothing in Kenya/Tanzania except quaint arabic spots like Lamu, Kisumu and Zanzibar but none archealogical. I suppose olduvai Gorge (600 miles from the coast) would qualify but I daresay desperately uninteresting to look at...

South of that to the pole nothing bar Great Zimbabwe which too is miles from the coast.

Stick to Italy, Croatia, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Egypt and the southern med coast for the archealogical spectaculars. They are there in their thousands.
