Thanks for the replies. Out of interest, why is that a lot of people say that when you get back the boat needs a refit and/or new sails and suffers what they imply is excessive wear & tear.

Ocean passage sailing does cause more wear & tear - at a pre ARC lecture Chris Tibbs said something like its equivalent to 3 time the distance run "cruising' There is a lot of chaff, made worse by sails hoisted continuously, reefed sails will wear badly around reef points. The boat is rolling far more than on a coastal cruise so the cabins take regular knocks, especially if something gets loose. It all adds up surprisingly quickly. So a refit after the eqivalent of 18K miles cruising ( whats that 7 - 15 years cruising for most folk?) seems totally normal.

The Atlantic West to east is a tougher trip than 'the milk run'.
2 x ARCs both times the circuit was pread over 2 years. First return St Maarten - Bermuda-Azores (sold the boat in Terciera) Second return Halifax - Brest (originally it was going to be Dingle, but a big storm pushed us south.

In 2013 we took a Moody 31 on an Atlantic circuit, end of March to middle of July. Many of the people we met were doing the same but left December. We're of again in January. Our plan is to sail back by end of June.

Hi Allan

I'm planning to do just the same thing in a Moody 31. Is yours a bilge keeler?

Hi Paul,
Yes, that boat had bilge keels. That was an unusual trip, we left the UK in March and did the circuit via Florida virtual nonstop.
I've since done two more circuits, in more conventional ways. Leaving the Canaries December, returning to the UK before the hurricane season starts.

I'm excited for you. Nowhere near enough threads recently like "Can I go round the world on my Bene First 25?". Make sure you blog/video and post it here!
There's going to be a youtube channel and everything. Early planning stages but even this is exciting
