Apropos AWBs

Re: An acid test needed here.

VFM - value for money

surely a better term, as that is what all this is about.

The term is attached to boats that the majority in the sport could afford, as they wanted a new boat. No..

Here's a thing, where do all the Bavs go, all they keep telling us at the factory is how they are stepping up production past 22 boats per week. Where are they all?

Delusions dear boy, delusions - it's made in Belgium for a start, nowhere near the Fjords that!

Re: AWB/MAB/OWL/Classic definitions

Red rag to bull time:

Multihulls must all be in the slightly superior list cause so many people feel a need to show that they couldn't possibly be as good as their AWB /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

I'd be happy to omit Dehlers too, but there again I am biased!!
Dehler say they have never had a hull suffer from the dreaded 'O' andI can vouch for the fact that they are not built "thin, floppy & see-through" like some either.

This sort of discusion reminds me of an incident that took place during the first Iraqi conflict. A huge US destroyer (or similar, it was very big anyway) entered a Middle Eastern port that contained naval ships from various nations. The US vessel flew flags which proudly spelt out "SECOND TO NONE". The captain of a smallish British Naval frigate type, immediately ran up flags that simply read "NONE"

It's strange some people simply cannot help feeling superior to others.......why, for example do some owners of old boats with some kind of "classic" heritage, feel they are somehow superior to a new BenJenBav, even though the latter would likely cost twice as much. On the other hand, why don't owners of the more expensive Najads,Rasseys,Malos and the like, feel the need to look down upon us 'poor' owners of BenJenBavs, and take every opportunity to try to do us down?

"Classic" owners cannot, it seems get it through their heads that we middle of the road AWB owners are very happy with our choices, and have not the slightest wish to join their ranks. (On the other hand, a new Najad 371 would by very nice thank you very much!!)

Re: An acid test needed here.

There should just be three types of boat....the static caravans (spend over 95%) of their life in a marina berth have their name attached to pontoon with steps bolted to pontoon and probably have mooring lines made to measure (in extreme cases these can have mains voltage fridge/freezers and telephone lines installed).....the mobile caravan, leaves its berth at least 10 times a year, and then sailing boats that spend less than 3 months in any one harbour?

Re: AWB/MAB/OWL/Classic definitions

Don't even try to argue for multihulls, half boat sailers will die before they accept them to be a viable method of sailing. Allowing caravan accomadation, no heeling and bags of room. Oh and the killer.....

monohull...
10 kts of wind = 6kts speed
20 kts of wind = 6kts speed
30 kts of wind = 6kts speed

But then we all sail upside down too.

So I sail an UDWB

Stop behaving like spoiled kids !!

Who cares? You're all bloody lucky to own a boat at all. If you REALLY think you're boat is average, sorry guys, you've all bought the wrong boats. Get yourselves one that you'll love, not one you denigrate.

Re: Stop behaving like spoiled kids !!

Hear Hear Bill!!!

I have to admit that I totally love my humble wee E-Boat. I spend my weekends sailing her and the rest of the time (especially the winter) dreaming about her.

She didn't cost me much in the beggining but over the years she has had nice new sails, new mast and rigging, a smart paint job, some electronic gizzmos and this year a nice new outboard.

Ok so some will see some of the loose edges and scuff marks and after some "opportunities" at the beggining of the season the filler marks.

But I dont care!

She's all mine, paid for and great fun.

How much is she worth?

To me priceless!

OK I like to see big beautiful boats and if I ever won the lottery then a world cruiser would be my first priority

But for now I am content with what I got.

Having said that if you saw my running costs such as Winter, covered storage (with lights and power) at approx £120, self launch for free and Summer mooring at the mouth of The Kyles of Bute for another £120.......etc etc etc

What is the saying that nothing will satisfy the man who cannot be content with a little?

Cameron

Nicho, like the story! But fancy some people considering that Moodys could possibly be 'average'! For build quality 80's Westerlys and Moodys leave the more modern yachts way behind. And I have looked at enough second hand and new yachts this year. (Nobody mentioned Hanses, they are pretty good).
Still having followed this and a previous thread trying to find out what an AWB was, (and I wasn't the only one) it is a relief to find that average white boat is all it meant.
But, at least you can sail!! We have had our 'new' Moody in dock for three months and will have missed most of the season before she is back in the water. Just be thankful!
