Thanks to Tranona and others I have revised my intention to get a gas heater to a 22 litre cylinder as being a better option for SWMBO's showers.
Just one item, I am not a mechanic and I would like to know where I fit the hot water flow and return on my engine, its a Volvo Penta 2003T
and although I have the workshop manual, still very confused as to where I should connect the pipework, I assume its on the fresh water cooling side?
Anyone to give me some help?

The workshop manual has a diagram of the fresh water cooling system, and the calorifier connections are indicated (as "hot water outlet"). The 2003T cooling is slightly different, but I think the connections are in the same place.

yes i have, and can see the fresh water cooling diagram but still not sure where to connect the flow and return

So did you notice the mention of "hot water outlet"?

There are other ways of plumbing the calorifier; if you do a Google Images search you'll probably find some pics. Your best bet is to visit a VP dealer and ask them, as you'll need a few fittings from them probably.

Cannot help for the 2003T engine but I have been doing the same on a VP MD2040B. The Hot Water Outlet installation kit arrived yesterday - I will attach a photo of the diagram for the locations on these engines - might help?

Yeahhhh, found the HW inlet/outlets on the diagram,, sods law it was the last item.
Thanks pvb.

I used to have a 2003T, and I think the calorifier was fed from another place, but can't remember. One thing you should do whilst delving around the engine is check the condition of the oil cooler - these corrode and can leak, dumping all the oil in the bilge and leading to terminal failure.

I sympathise with your problem Poter. I have a Volvo 2003 which is a bit different from the 2003T but the diagram and the engine itself bear little resemblance to one another. I was at my boat today refitting the raw water pump and noted signs of leakage of the coolant, so tried to trace the circuit. In doing so, I located the take-off and return for the calorifier, but could not actually see where the connections are on the engine. All I can tell you is that they are on the left side of the engine as you look from the inboard end. Looking from the other end I located the heat exchanger but to see the connections (which are tucked in between the engine block and the heat exchanger) will involve a trip into the cockpit locker to remove the access door on that side. Maybe then I will get a photo and find out where my leak is.

I have a 2003 (not T) fitted with a calorifier. I don't think there's a Volvo official way of connecting it, but basically you break the pipe on top of the engine running between the exhaust elbow and the thermostat housing and connect there. There's a photo of my installation on vyv_cox's site at http://coxeng.co.uk/engine/calorifier-installation/, alonf with two or three others that show a similar installation. The flow of water in the 2000 series is NOT intuitive!
