Oh dear!
Why do they have such a problem with protecting your boat from idiots? (usually idiots with sails!!)

Hello. I started that thread, and it was borne of genuine curiosity.

Using fenders as protection seems obvious to me. What baffles me a bit is people who keep their fenders out even when well away from anything that might require fending. It was very noticeable on my quick trip to the Broads that all modern motor boats had fenders a-dangle while all sailing and classic motor boats didn't. Same with a recent rip to Weymouth: the sailing boats which came out the harbour for a play in the bay all put their fenders in: the motor boats all kept theirs out.

Quite a few avatar pictures here show motor boats at speed and at sea ... but with fenders out. To a sailing person such as myself, that just looks odd.

The explanation that many modern motorboats have very poor access to the fenders while at sea sees reasonable, by the way.

Bother, you just said it; a Classic has a deck that you can Work. Modern cruisers (and some other craft (!)) aren't so accessible, and it's a helluva job fiddling with fenders - if yo know full well that shortly you'll have to redeploy them yet again.

Anyway like Ensigns and moorings it's a great topic to wind up other Forum members on a wet day.

What the hell it's all good fun - until others take exception.

A sail boat will heel and therefore needs to lift the fenders so as not to loose speed through drag, a Mobo stays upright so the fenders only hit the water when it gets bumpy (then you lift them)
