I fitted a JVC KD-R45 in my boat but seem to have a problem with very low display level, in fact it is unusable as it is. I have set the dimmer setting to max brightness but it is still dim.

Any thoughts?

My JVC is fine. There are two positive leads (presumably for ignition off on ignition on as in a car) - did you connect them both? I did (because they were there :D). Perhaps that affects it. Just an idea.

i had a JVC in a car. Same problem. Could only see it at night. I've got an old audioline in the boat, you turn a dial and this thing moves left or right and at certain points it sings a song or talks.
And it's got a cassette player.

Hi, tfor the reply.

I had spotted that as my unit would not power up at all at first as I had only connected the yellow wire as the second one simply said “accessories”. A bout of Google trawling unearthed that there had to be two positive supplies, the first being an uninterrupted supply to ensure that the radio’s memory was kept alive, the second, (switched) supply brought on the display lights etc and caused the unit to jump into life.

However, even with the two supplies etc the unit has still a dismal display level.

It could be that the unit is designed to be looked down on however, we have fitted the unit in the wheelhouse roof so we have to look up at it.

Thanks to all other but still in the dark ( or should hat be “the dim”)

JVC radio on boat

I have a modern JVC radio on my boat. Both the red and yellow wires need 12 volts for it to operate. It is annoying that when isolated by the battery switch, it needs to be reprogrammed on powering up, shame it does not have a backup battery. The reason your display may be dull could be because it thinks that the headlights are on (bear with me) and it thinks that is dark:0) The reason I say this is because my LED display often displays HEADLIGHTS, don't undersand how to cancel this and the instructions are s**t at best, but my display is bright so happy.

There is often a separate wire that will dim the display when the headlights are on. For many car CD players this is better perminantly connected as the display consumes a reasonable amount of power and the displays are usually bright enough when on the headlight mode.
If the display is dull check this wire is not inadvertently connected.

The other possibility is the contrast is wrong. The contrast setting depends an the viewing location, viewing from above, or below often need a change in contrast to make the display usable. The contrast setting is often burried in the sub menus because adjustment is usually only needed on instalation.

As well as the dimmer control, I guess you've checked out the day & night settings?

DIMMER SET AUTO : Changes the display and button illumination between the Day/Night adjustments in <BRIGHTNESS> setting when you turn off/on the car headlights *2. / ON : Selects the Night adjustments in <BRIGHTNESS> setting for the display and button illumination. /
OFF : Selects the Day adjustments in <BRIGHTNESS> setting for the display and button illumination.
BRIGHTNESS DAY [ 25 ] / NIGHT [ 11 ] : Selects the display and button illumination brightness level [00 — 31] for day and night.
