She was the Lancastrian and used by Fleetwood nautical college as a radar training vessel back in the 70s ?

No idea, but she looks a solid build I assume ex trawler conversion or was completed by a trawler yard, not a bit unlike a Malahide I have to say. Upper works not half bad either, often these conversion jobs look a mess but with consideration for what they probably wanted not half bad.

Malahide Trawlers

What condition is she in, is she for sale ?

She is a malahide and has been converted and i now own her, iam trying to find out her history at Fleetwood and pre Fleetwood i have contacted them but with it being so long ago most of the instructors have now retired.
so i thought i would try on here its probably along shot i have also tried the malahide web site but no joy so far.
Cheers A

Cool /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I used to live in Malahide when they built them there, spent many a happy hour as a teenager wandering around talking to the guys in the yard.

If I remember the hulls were built in Portugal and then towed to Ireland with their own trawler. That would have been an interesting trip to say the least /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I did here that when the hulls were towed over that they allegedly used marble as ballast which looked like big lumps of rock so no import duty, but how true that is i dont know. last year we took the car over to Ireland heading for Dingle and called in at Malahide for the night but its all changed i believe

Here's another, if you want to see what a million dollars worth of restoration can get you /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I believe he has a wealth of knowledge on Malahide's and did a lot of research so might be worth contacting. I think his was one of the hulls from Portugal.

You have a fine vessel there and one that if kept up to spec and maintained should never lose its value, Malahides as i am sure you are aware are highly regarded and there were never many built so you have a bit of maritme history there /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I chatted once to a guy that used to work at Malahide and he told me that boats like this would never be built again, the cost would be hideous, the man hours it took to build them ran into 1000's of hours.

As an aside I think there was someone on here a while ago that has a Malahide somewhere in Scotland, cant remember much except is was green /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Malahide trawler

How have you come by her, recent or have you had her a while, are you planning to do a restoration job or just get into the water and start using her. Would love to see some other pictures if you have them.

When i bought her three years past i did post some pics on the site so time for an update. After a rebuild in Stromness which was done by the previous owner the lancastrian was renamed the Orcades

There is room for two ribs up top the smaller avon bottom has been reinforced so it can take the ground without chipping.

All I know is that she was in Kip Marina - but then you already knew that!
Just a thought, but if you call Kip Marina they may know some history? If you want I can PM you the details of the person most likely to know?

I first saw her in Kyle of lochalsh about 9years ago when Angus Sinclair of Orkney owned her and was invited on board for a drink and fell in love with her, she wasent for sale at that time however Angus sold her about a year latter to Alistair Melvile who is based at Kip he owned her for 5 years, when he decided to sell Angus phoned to say she was up for sale, so i bought her and brought her up to Plockton.
Now i have asked the both of them if they knew anytihng of her history at Fleetwood or before but to no avail, i have also contacted the guys on this site http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=65357&nocache=1
but still no joy so i thought i would try here.
but if you can help with someone else ,yes please
Cheers Annan
Ps the boat at St monans in the site above is not Orcades but if any one knows her i would like to hear

Hi!

This is Dave Hemenway from Connecticut in the USA. I bought Tsmyne Too- a 52' Malahide Trawler made in 1968- a couple years ago and am in the process of restoring her. I am interested in communicating with other Malahide trawler owners.

Thanks for the pics Ulava (I didn't see them when you posted them in Jan). Beautiful boat. I'm confused though - was Lancastrian's superstructure completely re-built from scratch? Because in your pic in the first post she looks nothing like Orcades?

Do you ever see a 52' trawler yacht "Silver Dee" around W Coast Scotland? It's my brother's

Hi,

I also own a Malahide- 52' 1968 named Tsmyne Too. I believe she is the first of the Malahide series. She is in relatively good shape and I am enjoying working on her. I live in Connecticut, USA. What is the URL for the Malahide website you were referring to?

This vessel was the radar training vessel for Fleetwood Nautical college it was still in use in the early 80s but a call to the college would allow you to gain more details. I had the rather grim experience of training on this vessel. The whole class of experienced navigation cadets managed to be violently seasick - some in the radars themselves. The additional scanners and other top works made the vessel's stability somewhat questionable in a heavy seaway, they did try to counter this by strapping old tramlines to the hull but in my opinion did little to improve the ride. Even now the name Lancastrian makes me shiver as i recall that terrible day of vomiting.
