Anyone know how to get my raw water pump apart?

Hi all,

The attached photos show the Jabsco raw water pump and power take off adapter plate for my Ford Dover 2722 engine - the shaft oils seals need changing. Does anyone know how I separate the pump from the PTO adapter? Does the shaft come out of the pump or does the gear come off the engine end and dismantles from there?

Thanks

Puggy

If you clic on the pic, the circlip is quite obvious. Which also indicates that the shaft and bearings will be pushed out towards the gear end.

You probably will overhaul the pump as well. Take out the cam by removing the outside screw, then hook the back plate out. These will need changing. Circlip next. I can't remember whether the bearings and seals come off one or both ends, so you may have to pull the drive end off.

I would be a bit careful here, the circlip might just be a locater. There is a pic here of a new one, the adaptor to the engine is clamped on, I would look at getting that gear off first, maybe a taper there. Then undo the clamp bolt, slip the adaptor off and then see what is on the other end of the shaft.

It all becomes obvious once inside. Circlip out, yes. There are other o rings at the back of the impellor, a space and ring to sling any water out before it gets to the engine end. If water has got along the shaft that way you may find more expense on the horizon.

First step it to separate the pump from the drive assembly. Pretty sure you'll find a bigger circlip in the back end of the pump and you'll need to remove that and the smaller one, then carefully press the whole lot out of the back end of the pump body.

Great minds?

Yup, there's no way that's going to come apart as it is.

If there is nothing wrong with the drive assembly i would leave well alone. That gear will have either a roll pin or a woodruff key and will be difficult to remove without a decent puller, without damaging something.

Why not try something different
Check the number on the cover plate and look up the drawing in the makers catalogue
If you can’t find the number on the cover then look up a reference list
If you can’t find a reference list speak to lancing Marine who will sell you the seals and bearings or even a rebuild kit

Thanks all for suggestions, i will have a wrestle with it tomorrow. I will also speak to Lancing and get a service kit from them.

When you get round to the seals, order seals with stainless steel garter springs - or you are likely to be back in there again.!

have sent a pm.

disssamble pump first

screw out of cam
remove cam
remove inner wear plate
screw driver in that slot and wiggle
remove circlip
remove seal and bellows
un do pinch bolt
wiggle pump body from cast iorn
press out rubber bit holding ceramic ring.

take gear off if bearings are shot , or need to get to seal
bearings avaliable from bearing factors and cheap.

gear comes off
circlip removed

pump shaft and bearings removed
then remove seal by pushing in towards the engine

have two similar pumps and have rebuilt 3 times each in 5000 hours. (fitted on ford sabres)
