Anyone here a member of RHYC and on a pontoon?

Would it be possible to have the boat on a mooring at Rhyc and just use visitors pontoon to collect family and vice versa upon return ? , that's is what we do , I go get boat either on my own or with son and just collect /drop off women .

No problem with doing just that, a lot of members on moorings do, also to pick up stores, or come alongside for lunch etc. Re the problem with weather cutting up rough, it is always possible that the Club launch might be around to help, also MDL do - I believe - pick up from RHYC moorings, although for a fee naturally.

Somewhere in the thread you asked if the RHYC mooring charges were the same as the pontoons, they are not, but are a good deal less and can also be found on the website. It is £59 p.m. plus the Ipswich HA levy which varies in bands of length.

Update - all this has been very illuminating. It seems Woolverstone have just relaunched their mooring scheme - full use of marina facilities, water taxi, fuel at cost etc and £85 per metre for the six months. Then there's marina cheap winter deals such as TideMill, Granary etc at £850 for the six winter months. A nice extra would be if the Woolverstone deal included free use as a visitor to other MDL marinas. The big issue for us though is the water taxi, it removes all the hassle of young children and moorings. We're popping down to see them tomorrow and I'll update further.

We have always had a swinging mooring since being members at RHYC. Initially just upstream on a 3/4 tide mooring then further up on fire and aft as well a swinging. Last year we opted for aPin Mill mooring given the depth required for our new boat. RHYC deep water moorings are scarce. Sarah and Gus at Kings boatyard Pin Mill could not have been more helpful and accommodating. We never went aground well whilst attached to the mooring anyways last year. We also chose to lay up with them and this was achieved easily we draw 2m and at 38ft probably on the larger size in the boat yard. As I say it was easy, Gus picked us up from our mooring straight into the cradle lift and within 5 mins we were nicely installed ready for the ebb. I then watched from the Butt and Oyster with a bacon bitty and loads of coffee whilst the tide dropped and then as Gus drove the boat up the hard into position. This would have been achieved in our absence too as this is part of their great service!
I usually launch form RHYC with varying tenders and actually enjoy the trip down to the mooring which is opposite the Butt buouy. However can always use the Pin Mill slip way if required. There are plans to extend the concrete element of the hard this season I believe.
I have also appreciated a lift down on members boats as they were heading that way which is a bonus - thanks Will.
Our clubhouse and facilities combined with the options at Pin Mill mean we almost have the best of all worlds.
I know other forumites will think their set up is as good or better which just goes to show how great the East Coast is for us boaters. We also can be thankful for conscientious marina and boatyard folk who really do take pride in caring for our pride and joys. Happy Chrimmers one and all.

That's not what they quoted me last week (though it it what is on there website, albeit with a 2012 date on it). I'd be interested to hear what the outcome of your visit is.

It is interesting that MDL are obviously trying to get their mooring occupancy up. They have had lots of empty moorings this last few year, and in fact they lifted quite a few. I am not sure how good a package it is because you will still have to pay for winter lay up.

AFAIK they have always offered a Summer Season only package, certainly I was on this for a few years after I retired with my RHOD and laid up at Pin Mill, before that I was on their year round mooring deal which included all the lifting out, laying up and relaunching.

Incidentally the owners of the NIXI, shown in the smaller photo in that link spent yesterday with us here having a very jolly Boxing Day.

Got the details. £85 per metre just for the buoy. Or they do a package, £307 inc VAT per metre for 6 months buoy and 6 months mixture of ashore/marina that you mix as you want, includes lift in out scrub etc; plus 30 nights free stay in any MDL marina inc Woolverstone; diesel at their cost price and free water taxi 7 days a week.

It's a tempting package; take off the lift in & out and it's about £245 per metre for the buoy, six months winter in the marina/ashore and those 30 free nights which we'd use about 10 or 12 ordinarily in a summer in the Solent. Currently we pay £180 per metre for limited access. I work a lot of Saturday morning and Sunday evenings and at the moment we often can't get out at a time to be back ready for work. We also feel a bit like we waste our current summer marina berth because we're away 8 weeks every summer. It would be a complete no no without the water taxi, but with it we're very tempted.

The 30 free nights are very worthwhile if you cruise down to the Solent/West country regularly. Our friends who own the Nixi do this regularly and it saves them a lot in berthing charges while they are away. There is also an extra to this deal I believe in that you can be paired with another MDL marina (e.g Chatham ) and stays there are unlimited and don't count towards the 30 days. I may not have these details quite correct though.

When I checked on this deal in the summer I was told that 'wintering in the marina' was not an option; you had to lift out. As a wooden boat I would have gone for it otherwise.

I believe it has always been lift out and store ashore for the winter, whilst it is better for wooden boats to stay "wet" the NIXI has been ashore every year with no problems.

Similarly, £113/m (incl VAT) @ SYH for the same period http://www.syharbour.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2&Itemid=1

I made the point before: all the commercial marinas on the Orwell - bar Woolverstone - have similar prices.
For a boat our size (44') the difference in price is never more than £100 - wherever we go.
Price fix much lately?
Be very very careful some body might reads this

They were pretty emphatic that you can mix and match the six months ashore/afloat. In reality it would be no more than two months afloat in the winter. The thirty free nights can also be used at Woolverstone, which is cool because we don't spend more than that on board before the annual July & August getaway, so every time we go down for a weekend or half term we can just use the marina as a base. I'm not saying it's better than being marina based but it is cheaper than full access marina and there are some benefits to being on a mooring.
