Anyone had their oven door explode?

Rather alarming event at Lunch today. We were just waiting for the obligatory pasties to warm in the oven (... before you ask Waitrose Steak and Stilton - highly recommended!) Oven had been on about 15mins on high when tremendous bang, chunks of glass everywhere, the inner door on my oven had completely exploded. Luckily no-one was near it when it happened. Anyone any idea why?
As said pretty alarming if someone had been standing next to it they could have got hurt. I think its an Eno. Kate
 
Was it the glass shattering or a gas leak, or the gas leak causing a bang that caused the glass to go ?..... if you see what I mean. The glass shattering is a different problem to any leaking gas going bang. Just a train of thought that might help solve what happened. I havent had any problem like that, but glad to hear all well. It must have been pretty scary.
 
I dont think it was a gas leak... though you have me thinking now. Oven was still alight, and looked normal until I turned it off straight away. We then boiled the kettle later without problems.
 
It happend to me and yes they do go with a bang. Mine went 3 times in its first year, the door seems to buckle slightly when it heats up. In the end the whole cooker was replaced under warranty. This new one came with instructions to preheat the oven with the door slightly open, so they must have had a few problems. I havn't bothered doing this but its been ok for the last 2 years.
 
If it is like my oven the inner glass is held in with a couple of screws and it is a pretty tight fit. Wonder if the glass expands at a different rate to the surround and so it goes with a bang?
 
Why they put glass in these oven doors I cannot imagine. Quite unnecessary. Does anyone really want to peer in at whatever they are cooking? (and if they do, can they actually see anything?)

Another reason why I like my cooker from gn-espace. All stainless. No glass.
 
Because there is nothing worse than flat bread or yorkshire puddings..

I guess you only reheat in yours then?
 
aw don't, I need to lose weight, so I have agreed to stay off the pasties... well, to stay out of Greggs completely (see how northern I am lol).

I need a pasty 'patch'
 
It wont be a gas leak I think - some of the chemists may be able to confirm. The bang was inside the oven - and I can't see how gas could accumulate there from a leak, while the oven was lit. Moreover, just a tiny amount ofgas exploding would be a very big bang.
 
Yep - ours went last year, it was an ENO also. Apparently it is quite common, so much so that when I went to the local chandlers expecting to have to buy a new cooker he said he had three replacement glasses in stock. About 60 quid from memory.

Apparently the brass screws that hold the glass in have a soft washer that keeps the two apart. Either the washer hardens or it is too tight. I bought new washers at the same time.
 
The glass should be free to expand and contract, retained in place so that it can slide a little against the metal.
 
Thanks a lot for all the info. Yes its confirmed it was an ENO. GBP35 for a new door but hoping to get on the warranty.
For those worried about the pasties - we did still eat them! after excavating them from the chunks of glass on top and a lot of dusting and blowing off of the glass. Clear up was a nightmare, glass all over the floor, in the bilges, all in the lower sections of the oven. Ended up having to take off a cupboard door as glass was in the hinges. Oh well there was no sailing anyway due to the weather so we needed something to do
 
Yes. Served me right for trying to microwave my haggis!
