I found this on a thread here https://www.boatdesign.net/threads/new-product-to-save-soft-decks.54006/ and am wondering if the wise folk on this side have any comments. This may just be the savior I am looking to repair a deck...

From a recent survey on a boat I really wanted to make my home:
High moisture readings of over 30 % were recorded on the coach roof around the mast and a slight softening of the structure was noted. An area approximately 600 mm diameter around the mast was concave, internal inspection of this area found a similar area of the ceiling in the main saloon around the top of the mast compression post was convex. Water ingress into the reinforcing pad under the mast tabernacle and into the GRP sandwich core appeared to have taken place. Inspection of the support structure under the mast compression found no indications of damage.
High moisture readings of over 30% were recorded around the windless on the bow, around the baby stay mounting and around the port side amidships mooring cleat. No softening of the structure was found in these areas however further investigation is needed to establish the structural condition of the moulding in these areas.

I am wondering if Injectadeck, http://www.injectadeck.com/, would be a solution or if I am looking at a 10k solution.

Reading the thread on boatdesign.net shows it to be an advertisement for a snake oil cure.

Read the replies from the the forum members with 4 or 5 figure numbers of posts. All of those claiming it is a cure are all single digit number of posts. There is no technical data to back up their claims and no independent test results.

My advice would be to find another boat unless this one is free, as the survey may well make this boat worthless.

Agree. It is snake oil. A proper repair is not difficult and probably not essential in the short term. There are people where the boat is located who are capable of doing it properly.

If suffering water ingress into a balsa or sandwich core deck, WEST SYSTEMS offer a lot of advice, and the right kit which actually works, they are highly spoken of by people I know - not cheap, but user-friendly and good stuff and info - I think they offer info on their website, worth googling.

Go to You Tube and search for Sail Life. Mads has just done something very similar on his boat. It’s not that difficult but does appear time consuming.

Thanks all for the replies. Looks like I am going to be tackling this job in the next couple of months so will see what ends up happening. I agree on West Systems, I've used their product for fixing surfboards and windsurfers and can say that they are better quality than others I have used.

I've replace core before. if the space is full of water and balsa mulch, what is the glue superposed to bond to?

It doesn't make any sense on the face of it.

Thanks for the pics. Lucky it was only the hatch, I'm finding more and more leaks which seem to be brown in colour indicating rot. And with winter and rain here I think it will only get worse before I can properly tackle them...
