Hi,

Anyone else heading across the Channel this bank holiday weekend? We're planning to head across to Cherbourg early Saturday morning. Might do a preliminary run from Hamble to Yarmouth tomorrow evening.

Some forecasts for Saturday predict southerly. It could take you a while to get there.

I have a group who want to go to the Channel Islands leaving tomorrow evening.
I'm trying to explain to them that a cross channel will not be fun this weekend.
Strong Southerley's tomorrow morning means quite a bit of swell around tomorrow evening plus donkey all the way there. The alternative of a trip down the English coastline to Weymouth is not easy to sell.

Nope, we did a dash to Alderney and back last bank holiday. Somewhat perversely, I'm actually planning to do jobs this weekend - there's a number of little things, mostly electrical, that would make a big improvement to our summer cruise starting the following weekend.

We had been planning St. Vaast today but called it off due to weather. Tides are perfect though!

Probably be pottering about the Solent and Poole from this evening.

Yeah I wouldn't be going across today and now starting to have doubts about tomorrow. I imagine there'll be a bit of a swell getting whipped up for us. Also having the southerly on the nose all the way doesn't look appealing as you say Talulah :/

Interesting to read your comments.

Ohh! Memories, memories!

All those years going up and down with the tide in Weymouth, Poole and other points west, with two kids, waiting for a weather window to allow us to get across. It often ended up with another stranding in Cherbourg or Alderney, one trip even Ouistreham! Just for a few days in an unwelcoming country with restaurants that take last orders at 9.00pm.

Do what we did and after three boats and 27 years on the south coast we sold up the boat we had then (2001) and moved out to Greece. NEVER regretted it. A berth for 12months at Port Hamble with the same facilities we have for our 44footer in Corfu, would now cost around £22,000. They sent me a quote about three years ago!

UK south coast is a mug's game.

Must go; need to fix my roof before the next deluge starts!
