I have a week off in June 2-10 and wondered if anyone fancied some company (social and safety in numbers) at some point. I'm planning on some short trips in the Solent, a trip to Poole and possible East out of the Solent.
just going fishing with a m8 for a few days...............if the weathers good over the week you really ought to take the opportunity to head over to Weymouth and gain a perspective on the various bits
weymouth itself - both the quay and through th ebridge to the marina
lulworth bay (pubs), mupe & worbarrow anchorages.
chapmans pool
swanage - pubs resteraunts etc
studland bay - banks arms!
poole harbour and poole quay
We'd though about going further along the coast, but I'd be concerned on those onboard with me having very little experience (yep less than me) and wouldn't want to plan something they ended up uncomfortable with at the time etc. I'm still building my confidence too. I'm doing bunny jumps and extending my reach each time.
I'd certainly take up the offer of heading over/back to Alderney with you though in the future if the offer still stood.
What's the journey from Poole to Weymouth like? Anything specific to consider over jump to Poole? I suggested it to the crew and they seem up for it!
Oh know we talked about Poole before but was planning on the north channel out past Hurst, then heading out to a central waypoint to miss Chistchurch ledge completely then 2nd leg to No1 bouy at the Swash.
happy to have company on the crossing but we will be fishing to wind and tide / opportunity rather than cruising. thay said once at alderney its a simple run to st pp and back where you would probably spend the nights
Its an excellent trip because of the majestic Dorset coastline but as others have said, it's probably best to pick slack water and/or quiet weather to pass Durlston and St Albans Heads but once you're past them, it's easy. Plan to anchor in Lulworth Cove or Warbarrow Bay for lunch
The inshore route can sometimes be better whatever the weather (last weekend for instance) - but yes, either that or 4 miles or so offshore to avoid the worst of the overfalls. Need to keep your eyes peeled for pot markers on the inshore route though.
Good point about Lulworth range - I should have mentioned that /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
St Albans Head not really a problem, done it myself in a 19ft boat many times. Your Aquador shoukld be no problem. Rick's advice is good, also avoid a spring ebb, that's when overfalls really build up.
If it's a spring period, try to time for slack water, tides at Mupe Bay and Swanage can be used to get an idea for St. Albans.
Steve there is an MBM get together on that 1-3 weekend basically kicking around in the solent plus some beers/bbbq's etc. which we've signed up for. So if you fancied a larger crowd that might be an option for you.
the key to this trip/area is understanding the relationship between wind, tidal flow and the ledges for both travelling and anchoring up.
From this you can then tell what conditions will be like where and when and from that decide when to sling the hook and have a beer for a couple of hours so that you then cover the (now flat) water at 20knots in comfort instead of 10 knots of yuk chop! Combine this dynamically with a 3 day forecast to decide 'bigger plans'. Worse case it's only 2 hours from Weymouth all the way home.

Oh right, ta. That is the weekend I might have guests who have never been on a small boat so that could be a good idea. D'ya know where I can find details/sign up?
