We're planning to go to Orkney and Shetland for this year's Summer cruise. There's loads of info on Orkney on the web, three marinas, visitors moorings etc etc, and we've even got some charts that aren;t in fathoms.

Shetland seems to be a bit of a black hole as regards sailing information though, with the exception of Lerwick harbour. Anyone got any useful info, hints or tips?

Visited a few times 10 years ago, but always on a ship. Lerwick ok but it's an oilfield supply town. The approach sound is lovely and lots of boats on moorings, but don't recall a marina. There are a few privately maintained trees in Lerwick, which is nice. Elsewhere the island is well swept of foliage by the constant breeze. Dry walls are popular as are sheep and taxis.

Locals are great and I'm sure you'll enjoy a warm welcome.

Been through Sumburgh a few times when heading out on one of them big whirly thingies. The "Sumburgh Hilton" wasn't much cop, but then a few offshore "Bears" can have a bit of fun anywhere !

Sorry I don't know much about the sailing though !

Was up in Orkney a few years ago, and really enjoyed it. Would DEFINATELY go back again.

last time I was there was about 5 yrs ago .... there is/was a 'yacht club' there then, but I dont recall ever meeting any yachties ....
I remember seeing a few yachts on moorings in the harbour area, but I was there on commercial business ..... why not zap an e-mail to the harbour master - as has been mentioned before its a very welcoming place and the natives are very friendly

not being funny - its a tough place to get too, and a wild place when you are there ...... unique in a way - you will never foget it.

Hi nick,
I live in kirkwall orkney, you could try the lerwick boating club there are links of it over shetland sites. If you are in here Orkney i may see you.
Hope you have a good trip.

hi Nick
i worked in the shetlands for a couple of years some time back. locals best people that i ever meet in europe (dont call them Scotts). Weather forcast 100 days of gails a year. used to spend time in a deserted village - all the men used to fish on the same boat - one day no men left. Have you thought about getting one of the exfishermen to sail with you (paid?). stock up with Highland Park 100 proof when you meet up with Geordie.
