Hi, finally managed to sign up... I have a 32 foot boat, motor cruiser and was looking to take from Colchester to Maldon. We have taken it to Brightlingsea and back but are not confident enough just yet to take it all the way to Maldon as it looks a bit more daunting.

Bit of a long shot but is there anyone that could assist for a day.

Thanks

manifique - any details - date of trip, for example? Are you leaving the boat in Maldon or are you thinking of there and back? Is the boat in good nick, well maintained etc or is she going to Maldon for a re-fit...
Any information may help someone considering your request...

Yes a little scant on information als what the boat is engines etc would be useful and kit on board, age a pic all these things are useful and will most likely get you a better response

I live in heaven .., Brightlingsea ... and know the Blackwater. Sure we can sort out something..

Can’t send you a PM... for some odd reason:mad:

Can you send me a PM instead?

To break away from Colchester will need a fair bit of tide. To get up to Maldon will need a fair bit of tide. A fast boat can do it on the tide; a displacement boat can't. Simples. All depends on the mooring and the tide requirement and the boat speed.

Hi thanks for all the replies, much appreciated. Sorry about the initial lack of info.

Its a cruiser with a Perkins Sabre Diesel 135hp. The engine is sound. Am taking it to Heybridge to be more specific and keeping it there on a mooring. Doesn't have a chart plotter but used my phone and Radio is a bit ropey.

Was more tentative about the journey from Brightlingsea as it opens up a lot more so looks more daunting.

Where is the mooring - outside the lock or in the Basin? You DO NOT need a plotter, not a phone, just a chart. Simple pilotage. Perkins Sabre - lovely. I am guessing 9/10 knots so it would need two tides. As said, a lazy plod would be lovely. If the 'mooring' is within the Basin, you will need to lock in shortly before High Water; if on a mooring outside the lock could be two hours either HW; a Stebbens Mooring? Ditto 2 hrs HW before or after.

Bit more detail please (What boat, what moorings) we can be more precise.

Hi, it's outside the lock think it used to be stebbings , one pontoon recently redone after floating away!! Think recently changed hands and owned by the boat yard in Maldon. . The engine certainly pulls along very nicely so hopefully shouldn't take too long

The yard will still be owned by the family, rented out to the peeps from TS Rigging. The tide surge two weeks ago would have caused a problem but it would be relatively easy to reinstate. (I stayed with Stebbens for over 30 years).

Sorry, you need to provide some info to make a judgement on whether this can be done in one tide. Colchester is (very) approx an hour and a bit earlier than Heybridge. If you are right up at the Hythe (Colchester) you need to wait for the tide before you can get away. Any idea how long before HW before you can break away? How much do you draw (I assume little)?

Colchester to Heybridge is approx 20nm (cutting round Mersea [which is simple]) but the first 3.5nm is subject to speed restrictions and ditto the last 1nm. If you are fast i.e 20kts you can make it on one tide (assuming you can break away at least an hour before HW Colchester). If you are displacement i.e say 9 kts, potentially a close call.

Bigplumbs thread was a sensible question. A little background would be good.
