Looking for ways to meet more people interested in boats and things related.. Came across Poole Yacht Club's website which looks interesting but I couldn't see if it was sail only or open to power boaters as well..

Is anyone here a member that can tell me a bit more about it?

Tranona of this parish is Poole Yc I think, but otherwise quite sensible, I'm still Parkstone YC albeit an overseas member these days. Both clubs have motor boat members but most will have graduated from sail or have dinghies or smaller, probably racing sailing boats also. the definitive YC for powered vessels ( and has sail) in Poole is Royal motor yacht club on sandbanks peninsular. lots of power boats are up at Cobb's Quay Marina in Holes Bay and they have a 'club' of sorts, even if mostly a social drinking typeone. Same for Poole Harbour YC marina at Salterns Marina, Lilliput. I've been foreign for 3 years so things may be different but someone will advise

I'm not a member of PYC but I am a berth holder at Cobb's Quay marina where there is the CQBHA ( Cobbs Quay Berth Holders Association) http://www.cqbha.co.uk/ who put on do's and cruises in company + social events with 2016 being their 25th Anniversary there is expectedly a big party being laid on. Also at Cobb's is the Cobb's yacht club (read as pub) which is very social.

I also belong to Poole Bay small boat angling club http://pbsbac.co.uk which isn't as smelly as it sounds. We have 15-20 berth holders at Cobbs quay with 230ish members and 120 boats in total, it is also in 2016 our 25th anniversary with us holding a bash at Cobbs the week before the CQBHA so 2 parties in 2 weeks must make our marina the place to be in 2016. Anyways if your anywhere near us and think you may have the same or similar interests we would be happy to see you down there.

Thanks for the information.. My boat is trailered so I am not a berth holder anywhere.. In a way that is what appealed to me about Poole Yacht Club in that they have a slipway so I could theoretically launch from there as well, although the slipway might be reserved for the little sailing dingies..

I am not really into fishing which I guess is a requirement for an angling club.. I like the idea of the club being for "small boats" though because I can't really take part in cross channel cruises in a 7m Merry Fisher..

Essentially what I am looking for is a social boat club that heads out for cruises in company from time to time along the coast with at least some members of a similar age to myself.. I guess something like this forum but in the real world..

I agree. Social boating would be great. There is a lot of our wind assisted friends in the marinas near me and tbh they don't socialise much with us with engines. When over at poole there is a lot on the bigger end of the scale who do the longer cross channel stuff ....

Wether depending I'm out this weekend and off to Isle of Wight and Lymington. If its a bit windy i will stay at poole yacht haven. We are a friendly group and always welcome to join us.

Sorry fat thumbs on a tablet don't work well hence the inadvertent above deletion.

Our club (pbsbac) approached PYC a few years ago to see if our members could use their facilities on an adhoc or associate membership basis. Some of their committee were kind of interested but when put to the vote our suggestions were flat rejected, this despite a rumor we had heard that PYC were not in the best place financially. So I guess what I'm trying to say is you would be very lucky if you could get permission but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Our club also hold social events including cruising fairly local to Poole, ie Weymouth Cowes Lymington and others. We also have an annual trip over the channel to Alderney albeit this is for the fishing around the island. The smallest boat that ventured across the channel with us was 6 metres, but you do obviously have to be very picky with the weather but it is very doable.

If you like I will post on here when we are going on a social cruises you would be more than welcome to join us without joining the club

Which group are you with? Or is it you and a few friends?

Sounds good and sounds like I am on the right track for finding what I am looking for.. Yes, please let me know when cruises are happening and hopefully I can make it to join in..

I'm a member of Poole YC and have come from a motor boat background.

Having been a member for a year now, I think unless you're looking to sail then Poole YC is probably not the place for you. There are motor boat members, but without generalising, they tend to be older members who no longer sail. All the activities of the club are heavily in favour of racing (mostly) or cruising (a bit). The slipway is exclusively used to launch dinghies, or perhaps RIB's if you are using it for safety boat or training.

I joined because I sold my motor boat and still wanted to spend some time on the water. If you fancy learning to sail there are plenty of opportunities to crew on a race boat on Tuesday evenings in the summer (or Sunday morning in the winter series) as long as you can find an amenable skipper prepared to put up with a newbie (and most are) . I get out at least once a week crewing on a quarter tonner plus some time on the club RIB's doing safety boat on a Thursday evening. If you wanted, you could sail almost every day provided you made the effort to meet people and get involved.

If you fancy meeting people, as discussed, Cobbs is a good place. Parkstone Bay Marina (where I berthed my old boat) has a nice cafe and a visitor pontoon. Very nice guys there (tidal though if you get there at the wrong time!). Poole Quay Yacht Haven is one of the nicest places to stay because of all the shops/restaurants/pubs and the staff are great.

Not sure about Royal Motor Yacht Club - a friend tried to join and was put off so didn't proceed. You need to get someone in the club to second your application (as with many clubs). I get the impression it's a bit elitist but I haven't been there myself so could be entirely wrong.

As Robin says, I am a member of PYC. There are a few mOBOs but all members who have previously sailed or some who sail or race as well as having a motor boat. The number in the Haven is limited to (I think) 15%, which is probably about right.

However, it is primarily a sailing club with strengths in racing, dinghies, keelboats and cruisers. Definitely not short of members, nor short of finance (although the current £750k replacement programme for the pontoons etc in the Haven caused a few gulps from the membership!).

The slipway is not suitable for visitors to use as it is in daily use for club activities plus hauling and launching of club boats and regattas in the season. visitors may use the Haven if there are empty berths.

As suggested RMYC has a strong Motor membership - but also some very active sail activities. Think the social side is very active as well.

I currently just go out with a few friends but would like to get more involved. I may stay at cobbs this weekend for a night so may go in their bar for a nose.

Thanks for all the information everyone.. Looks like there are a few options around and maybe more than one that will work for what I am looking for..

@Ian - If I can get a gap I may pop down there too and see what it's all about..
