Heard on VHF and then on Radio 4 about a dead whale floating around Felixstowe and Harwich this weekend? One conversation on the VHF described a dead whale 10m long with large number of seagulls standing on it.

What becomes of such a creature? Do the coastguard get it towed out to sea?

I was in Felixstowe at around 1600 today and there was a whale on the beach, a local showed me a picture, but i didn't venture on the beach to see. Sad :(

I also heard the vhf warning about a dead whale in The Sunk area and then the reports tonight of a dead whale found on Felixstowe beach.

Read the newspaper today and there may be a problem with wind farms and the vibrations upsetting their sonar navigation.

Unlikely but quite possible.... A friend of mine who works on the offshore farms told me that lightning takes off the blade tips, and the subsequent vibrations caused by the imbalance is shaking the joints between the foundations and mast to pieces. It's costing a fortune to sort out.

Very sad about the whales; I don't recall strandings happening so frequently when I was young.

I was out on the day the strandings were reported, and sailed from Titchmarsh via Pye End towards the entrance to the Deben and didn't see anything, but I may have been too far offshore - even though I was being buzzed by windsurfers!

According to the local radio, the one on Felixstowe beach was hit by a ship and was either dead when that happened or died from the impact. It was then carried by the ship until it slowed down on it's approach to Felixstowe
