After years of slagging off Volvo marine engines and giving owners my withering
'you poor bloody sod' look, I now find myself embarked on the purchase of a boat fitted with twin TAMD41A's. Help me, dear people, is there any recognised cure for this condition? I would prefer medication I can buy over the counter as I am too embarrassed to talk to my Doctor.

<font color=blue>Hmmm! OK Chris follow my instructions carefully to get the Pavlova's Dog effect. Carefully place your willy between the door jamb and the door, say the word Volvo whilst slamming the door, do this several times and you will find that the word changes to 'Volvoooooooo' don't worry about this side effect it's part of the treatment. Keep doing this until said willy is swollen to several times its real size, in your case 2" and you will find that you begin to hate Volvooooo's

ah! I didn't say they were cheap, I said they were good engines. Mustn't confuse the two. I never expected boating to be a cheap pastime.

I think that the early ones 40/41 series, which have been plodding along for aons pouring forth an earth shattering 100 or so plus gee gees are not the problem.
No one,inc V......o could squeeze blow/suck extra 3 times type output from prehistoric old block with out something giving way.Even if with protective magic runes written on top ie KADS etc etc.
Chum is in process of buying Targa 38 in Nice.Sale is being screwed by problems with 150 hr v.....o engines.
While looking for my current money pit I looked at several boats with high hour 40/41 engines one of which had 5000 hrs on meters.Sounded nice to me.

I reckon its not that they're bad engines - I'm on my fourth V...o powered boat and have had very few mechanical problems over twenty years - but the few times I've had to replace bits (starter motor (1), outdrive coupling(1) and general servicing spares) I've been astounded at the price of a box labelled V...o., but containing someone elses gear and available much cheaper elsewhere. Also the reluctance of dealers and boatyards to use 'non-v...o ' parts even though they are the same kit.
This point has been raised several times in mags and on this forum, but no satisfactory explanation has been forthcoming. V...o themselves attempted a reply, but this was far from convincing.
Thanks to the V...o user group forum the price of maintaining these engines can now be brought into reallity for most easilly accessed 'replacement' parts.

mercruiser isn't much different........in the UK anyway, and for that matter Yanmar parts don't seem much different.
Would be interesting to see the side by side costs for a SM and alternator for say the diesel around 230hp for each - all scary!

Hi Chris.

Nothing wrong with a properly maintained Volvo in it's proper environment.
What they don't like doing is plodding along at slow speeds in a displacement boat.

What are you getting !!

Naughty boy, you know what I'm buying!! However, just checked weight with surveyor and its a touch over 15 tonnes. So perhaps with only a couple of 200's its T/W/O all the way - even to achieve displacement speeds! Will this do? Current owner claims 15Kt max. 12 cruise. Should I insert small print into contract and then sue him and get boat for nowt? Is this fast enough to waterski behind? /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
