Anybody Else Cancelled Their Easter Sail

Sadly away from my boat so sadly no Easter sailing for me, weather there does look a bit chilly.

Can say that here the temp is around 29 deg winds between 5 & 20 knots for the past week or 2...

Studland looking less attractive but we will anchor overnight somewhere.

Thank goodness for that! I was beginning to think we'd be the only ones out there. Those with maintenance issues aside, are people going soft? To think that there are complaints about an overcrowded Solent! Sounds like a few of us will have it to ourselves this weekend. Perfect breezes. Just a bit nippy. The problem is.......?

[Stands back and waits for the flack.....]

Us poor old charterers book months in advance so go out regardless. Got heating on the boat and, as someone has already said, shorter sails, longer time in front of the fire in the boozer; actually starting to look forward to it.

There's no such thing a cold weather , just the wrong choice of clothes il be out sailing somewhere on the clyde

Toned down. Studland looking less attractive but we will anchor overnight somewhere. Any suggestions for viable options in the forecast gratefully received. What a bloody year to get a boat and boldly declare we are going to be year round sailors. Lesson 1 learnt!

That'll be Newtown Creek then... or go into Poole Harbour and up to South Deep.

If you are down on Friday, I will be around if you need more help on directions.

Had a trip planned to Portland at the weekend but the cold weather and thought of a beat back on Sunday/Monday against strong Easterlies has me deciding to stay at home, I do this for pleasure!!

The Crinan canal is now closed because of ice and is likely to stay that way until in their words ... We have some rain and no night frosts.... So we are waiting!!

Will be doing a short trip Chi to Hamble tomorrow, then thinking about it for the weekend. First sail for this boat for 20 years! Bought her 2 years ago and have just finished a complete refit. Looking forward to sailing her at last, despite it being -1C right now and predicted 3C tomorrow! Double thermals day! Why do we do it?

Would it be rude to enquire how that came about? It's a well known, well charted and well marked hazard.

Skipper knows the area well and very familiar with the Submarine Barrier. He went below to make a cuppa. As he did so he told the guy on the helm to do circles. The tracking shows a straight line into the barrier with no circles.
Communication error. The guy on the helm was Iranian and although he has been in this country for some time I suspect didn't understand the 'go around in circles' bit.
He had sailed before with this skipper and was known for being a bit of a liability on board.
The skipper and the second crew member are also helping out with the repairs this weekend.
The boat was dried out at Hardway so I could inspect the damage. i.e. was it an insurance claim or DIY. This time it's DIY but sometimes the consequences of this type of incident are not known for some time.
I think they were very lucky not to puncture the keel box.
They phoned the Marina shortly afterwards in case an emergency lift was required. Whilst the marina staff were very helpful it does take 2 hours to organise. Worth knowing if you are debating whether or not to make the call.

I will be down Friday Nick. Hils and daughter not until late Saturday (possibly topical story about medical students not knowing their arses from their elbows...). So any tips for Sunday/Monday gratefully received. If anyone else daft enough, I'm well up for a raft up and bbq on Sunday night? Got to be at anchor though - promised myself.

Hmm...it'll be interesting, launching a ruddy great racing dinghy for a first-time sail, singlehanded, wearing a summer-weight wetsuit...

...I may put it off till May. Or June?

I swam (not wetsuited) at Ventnor last July after six weeks of rain and dismal temperatures...it certainly wasn't warm, but it wasn't really discouraging. Anybody know what the Channel temperature is right now?

Currently 5.1 degrees.

Was out today pushing East. Or, far from the madding crowds maybe? The cold air made the spray ( almost) seem playful by comparison and there was more sun than we've seen in days ... But, wind over springs and beating, it got very lumpy ESP with headland effect , stuffed more water over the boat than I have in ages but great fast speeds and sore muscles, a clean bottom and seapolished decks.. typing this after a hot bath tho. More for Easter ? Maybe

We're heading out Friday for a week whatever, eberspacher and marina electric will do - Lymington is well booked up this weekend so I think people are heading out regardless.

We are fully booked for anything over 35feet, but some smaller spaces available.

I have a theory that people who planned longer passages settle on something local instead. This was apparent last year when there was no single 5+day weather window to go across the channel, so coast hopping was more common.

i phoned this morning trying to book Nick - so had to go for the Yacht Haven. With it being cold SWMBO wanted the electric but even Dan Bran is fully booked with rallies and I expect the town quay will be full too.

Still minus degrees here.... no sailing but most probably some jobs, like continue to replace the heating ducting, hopefully off with the tarp cover that covers the whole boat, a few other 'small' jobs then maybe a wash, polish & wax IF it warms up during the days..... that's my Easter 'cruise'.
