Anybody browsing

I'm looking for the best value handheld VHF on the web, has anyone seen anything while they have been browsing (it is for a grabbag have purchased fixed DSC from Milltech for boat). I will look at Allgadgets but pennies are getting tight now so have to be thrifty. SWMBO has been very patient but in the past week I have bought:-

1xInflatable Dinghy
1x Outboard for above
1x flarepack
1 x fixed VHF/DSC
1x Antenna for above
1 x bracket & powersupply for GPS
1x Flagpole & holder
1x Radar Reflector
2x new locker locks

She is now starting to talk about new bathrooms etc (tit-for-tat expenditure) so I need to show her I am being careful.

Would also like to know best deals anyone has seen on chartplotters and would appreciate opinions of grayscale screens - or should I budget for full colour

Go for colour the grey scale are not that good, I have found, You want if you can the new day light veiwing one, they are good. best of luck in your hunting of equipment

But colour is easier on the eye, but it will still show you to be in the same place as the cheapest plotter!

I think the best thing we can do is send round a kitchen designer so that once the kitchen is fitted you can then carry on spending..

I spoke to golden arrow marine (poole) last week re raymarine chartplotters, they offered a rl70c, colour plotter for £750, its was supplied new on a new boat but the owner wanted an intigrated radar/plotter system. looked good value.

I got a handheld from Mailspeed in Burnham for 89.99 it was the (i think) Silva M298 and seems to work fine.

I bought a Silva earlier this year - seems good value and works well (has lots of the features that other makes have but at a high premium). Think I went on E-bay and got to a local company.

I'm on my third M298 body. Still got the original batt and aerial. Although I will say that MES Ltd and Silva have been excellent in their aftersales service.

having used both the XM2000 handheld vhf and the silva one - I purchased the XM one and have been very happy with it. It much less complicated to use and comes with both 12V and 240V chargers, waterproof bag and a battery holder for AA batteries aswell as the Ni Cad.

I am currently looking for a Inflatable/RIB and outboard. Did you buy it new? is so where from ? Prob 3m & Max. 4HP

I have searched the web but still not found a bargin.

I bought mine from Gaelforce. The dinghy is a Plastimo 2.4 with the new Honda 4 stroke 2.3 outboard which meets my needs. Best on price but not really what I would call a bargain

Worth speaking to them (the number is on the webite ask for Gary). They had some Reef Inflatables that seemed like good value to me. They have solid floors and inflatable keels. They sent me one to have a look at and it looked like a good quality piece of kit but it was too big for me to stow. Their prices on the Honda's were the best I came across.

They were good to deal with

Hiya, Apparantly the Icom 1C M21 has a very good battery life.
I have the Silva star M 298 and as long as you keep it connected to the 12 volt its fine. You should get a free cable with it. Its great value for the money.
I got mine at Port Hamble, watch the price should be sub £100

Just a thought ! If the radio is for a grab bag then make sure you also get a waterproof bag to go with it, or even better get a waterproof hand-held. Using some models when they are inside a waterproof bag is not very easy if you are cold & wet.

Thanks everyone, I have seen the Silva unit sub £100 with a free waterproof bag and I will probably go for this

By the way the best colour chartplotter I have found is on a US site - Boatfix.com a Garmin unit at $529 - less than £350!! - Still thinking about it but the pennies are getting a bit tight so i will probably stick to my GPS and paper charts
