i HAVE JUST PURCHASED A USED BOAT WHICH HAS A PHILIPS DECCA SYSTEM.
AS IT IS NOW NO LONGER USED SHPULD I REMOVE IT AND THROW IT AWAY. OR CAN IT BE USED OR CONVERTED TO BE BE OF SOME OTHER USE.
ANY IDEAS?

No use whatsoever, bury it at sea with full honours! (make sure it sinks) Somebody converted their antenna to receive short wave, but hardly worth the bother, when a bit of wire will do.

Don,t know the philips ...but if its not taking up to much room its might be worth saving as a quick and easy calculater for celestial nav...on 2nd thought only if it calculates bearing and distance as great circle....decca being short range probably calculated rumb line ...check the book.....

There was someone looking for one a while back. I think they were going to convert it for a blind sailor. I can't remember how but it may have been to do with the beeping it used to do. I also have an old unit in the loft so let me know if you find someone that wants them!

Les,
In the attic! At least give it a decent burial at sea! Was the best we had for many years, mine gave sterling service, couldn't just toss it in the attic, deserves better than that!

May be updated

It depends on the type of Decca. Philips (I believe) has made an update to transform deccas into gps's. It will depend on the type whether it is possible or not.

good luck & happy sailing

Couldn't chucking it in the water be described as pollution? It seems the sort of thing ARC boats would do. Like they do with all their other litter. Perhaps it is greener to be a NARC after all.......

It will bio-degrade, they always seemed to in the wheelhouse anyway!! NO, you're quite right. how could I dream of such a thing, burn it instead, then bury it at sea!

<font color=blue>Wrap it up in Greaseproof paper, cover it with hefty amounts of clingfilm, place it in a sealed aluminium box. Bury it where it can be found in 500 years time when the finder can take it and sell it for a small fortune as an antique. In this way you will make some soul in the future very happy.

OK. Take it to your local council rubbish collection office, ask them for it to be disposed of in an ecological friendly manner. They will then take it from you and throw it in a landfill site!

If it's an AP5, I believe you can subsitute a GPS input to replace the Decca reciever.

Have a word with Steve Gubbins of Garmin UK on 01794 519944 - think it's their garmin 35 reciever that's used. He'll probably tell you the wiring sequence etc.

As the 35 is a OE piece of kit you might have some difficulty in getting it through normal yottie channels, but you'll find Marine Electronic Services can source it for you.

I have an old philips one in the shed - what about getting them mated and see if we have a breeding pair?

Fry off an onion, add garlic, mushrooms and a sliced red pepper. Then add 8 fl oz of beef stock and bring to a simmer. In the meantime boil some potato and mash.

Put the decca into an oven proof dish and pour the mixture over the top. cover with the mash potato and add some grated cheese. Then place in a pre heated oven at 190 for about 35 mins or until it is golden and there you have it.

Decca pie.
