Any thoughts; intermittent starter issue.

SWMBO ca has he same issue. It manifests itself when the car is hot the car been driven then left to heat soak.

She opens the bonnet and allows it to cool and it will then start.

Like you we replaced the starter motor and the solenoid does not click so it looks like the starter key/wiring connections that goes open circuit when hot so cnnot see the fault at home.
Ours is the opposite. From cold, turning the key to the starter position does nothing for up to about 5 times. After this the solenoid will start throwing in and out, often many times. Ultimately it has always started eventually. It's as if a connection or something needs to get hot before it will pass enough current. Once the engine has started and run a while it always restarts.

Yes I see that. We could have a similar issue than manifested itself in a different way.

I would be interested in what you service station has found.

You may be right with the temperature. Corroded battery terminals can do exactly this. They let some current thru - not enough for the solenoid - the high resistance produces heat and it may cause (mostly by expansion of the material) for them to become fully conductive. Been there, seen that. :)

As explained earlier, some very good auto-electricians (and me) have given a lot of time and work to this problem. If there is one thing that it most definitely is not it's anything simple like corroded battery terminals, or connections to the starter motor, or a corroded earth strap.

Auto electrician just called. The motorhome has started as it should both last night and this morning. It turns out to have been a corroded multi-pin plug under the passenger-side dashboard. One of the wires in this plug supplied the starter/ignition switch. Not really a boat problem, although when my Eberspacher would not run correctly it turned out to be exactly the same cause.

Ah. I read all cable connections being checked as literally that and was looking for something that didn't involve an accessible connection. :)

Still useful info though, a lot of boat engines have those multi-plugs and i've seen them do the same/similar. Glad you got to the bottom of it.

Pleased you got it sorted.

SWMBO's car was in for service last week and the dealer could not find the issue so, I just need to get down to have a look at SWMBO car.

Spent much time on Thursday checking connections out. There may have been a loose connection for the starter on the keyswitch. But not 100% sure. Did the reverse journey yesterday, all working ok so may have that connection. Not over confident I have solved it though.

An erratic starter motor can simply be the commutator or brush gear on the motor is dirty. Assuming all else has been tried, take it off and clean the com. If its really bad have it skimmed on a lathe, then fit new brushes and marvel at the difference! Of course this assumes you have tried everything else suggested.....
