Any plans for upgrading over the Winter?

Rafiki gets lifted out next week, and in addition to the normal winter servicing, we plan a few upgrades:

New canopy, with custom front end
Additional domestic batteries plus smart charger
DAB radio plus Ipod dock and remote control
Memory foam for the berths

SWMBO is also talking about:

Rafiki embroidered pillows/cushions
Fender socks

We have some major service items to do too on the engines;

Camshaft drivebelts
Heat exchanger de-crud

It will be a busy off season.

we will be using ours thoughout the winter but have a few things to upgrade mainly we would be interested to know how you get on with the memory matress and cushions,
we want to get some done with the name Pearl on them.
we get our engines serviced in the spring ready for summer

Might want to be careful with the memory foam. Very comfortable but they tend to absorb moisture - when we changed the foam mattress on our last boat the supplier advised us against using it on a boat.

We upgraded to memory foam last year and its not in a good state this year. The foam is wet and starting to grow little mouldy pests as well

Apparently you can get some kind of plastic material that you lay the matress on that stops the moisture absorbing. I'm sure I read about it in a recent copy of MBM. I need to hunt some down for next year otherwise its going to be new matress time!

Have started the winter refurb. The 'go faster' stripes have just been painted. The original stripes that were in the gel coat had badly faded/chalked.
Galley worktops: Have bought the 'solid surface'. new sink and taps. Now just need the boat out of action for a few weeks so I can take the old worktops off to use as a template.
Tempted to replace the cabin sole boards but want something a bit better than the usual teak/holly veneered plywood.

And there's me telling people, that the one day I was promoted to cook on your fine craft, it was a very smart and well laid out galley that I was a tad envious of you, now you're ripping it out for an upgrade, you've got too much coin in the bank, is it a tax break Edward?

Fix a few structural issues.
Repair keelson and hog under cabin sole.
New Spray rails.
Epoxy hull.
Fix port oil leak.
Paint engines.
Paint and titvate.

I've got various jobs earmarked for this winter including new cockpit/fly upholstery and replacing the u/water lights I also need to find a way of improving the comfort of the flybridge helm seat because it gives me back ache. Sounds odd but one thing I'm definitely going to do is put an aircon vent in the master toilet. Can't stand being too hot or too cold when doing my morning ablutions

The original galley work tops were white. A couple of years ago I replaced them with black solid surface. It's now too dark plus the black solid surface shows every scratch. So I'm going back to a white solid surface. (DIY to keep costs down.)

I thought that due to the humidity of the bathroom, aircon vents are not recommended. Or at least you should be able to close the vent when having a shower and aircon is functioning that is (unless you imply that the master toilet is a different room to the bathroom/shower...) Else you overload the aircon unit trying to dehumidify all this air it's picking from your bathroom. That's from buildings down here, I guess similar steamy conditions exist in Croatia for you

Yes hopefully a newer boat, but if my 410 wont sell at a price I want then its going to be,

New canopy, new nav gear, maybe ouside upholstery in this new movida type material like the newer Princess and Fairlines, engines and generator service etc.

Oh and the wife wants tracvision.

There wouldn't be a pick up in the heads just an extension from the side cabin outlet vent which happens to be located conveniently close to the bulkhead between the heads and the side cabin. Yes I can imagine that picking up heavily humidified air from the heads would lead to excess condensation from the air handler but, as I say, that isn't going to happen

the most important are:
- making a staircase from the cockpit to the bathing platform (replacing that ladder)
- perhaps placing a door in the transom, from the bathing platform to the Utility room
- referbishing the teac deck; sanding off 1 or 2 mil and making new 5 by 5mil grooves for recaulcing

Yes, I forgot the teak. I will be sanding mine back this winter too. Don't think it will need caulking, as I only plan a skim.

New canopy in Sunbrella blue.
Carpet replacement in cabins.
New GPS Plotter with autopilot updates.
Replacing reading lights with LEDs in both cabins.

But I already did some works from mid Summer till today:
1) replaced changed and modified genset exhaust
2) Services holding tank, and macerator pump
3) addition of two courtesy lights in cockpit

Our winter plans are simple:

Sell the yacht (completed)

order new MoBo (done)

Ignore the rising cost of diesel (trying hard)

Some great and varied responses here so I thought I'd add mine.

Already 'upgraded' from a 14' to a 21', but that's not the real story as the 21' is very much going to be a work in progress for a while and thus the 'over the winter' bit of the thread title is perhaps a bit ambitious! Over the next couple of years might be a better description in my case...

Anyway target for the winter (21'):-

Run up engine, check for any issues, change oil, filter and then winterize. (this weekend)
New Floor, bulkheads and wiring
Transom??? (hoping not rotten as this will mean big expensive delays)
Strip, overhaul & rebuild dead trim pump
Check and service Outdrive
Send prop off for refurb
Interior refit (fire suppression, lighting, upholstery and carpet/flooring)
Rub down, fill and re-do gel coat
Replace or repair trailer (£££££££)

There's more that needs to be done, but probably won't make it on the list before spring - like new camper cover, fit VHF, rebuild swim platform etc

For the 14'

Re-trim seats
Repair gel-coat scrapes & bumps on hull
New tyres on trailer

Doing the last item this week as I'm hoping for a few more runs on the water yet! The rest of the 14' items will probably wait until sping so I can assess progress on the 21' and determine if getting it on the water in 2012 is possible.

I should add that I've never done any gel-coat and only a little fibreglass work, so likely to take three times longer than anyone else would! Oh and then there's the weather and work factors... Hrrmm, 'Over the winter' is definitely optimistic...
