Hi sneddon,
the short answer is......... yes!......... there are a couple of visiter moorings in the "pool" just upsteam of Appledore lifeboat, i THINK they are owned/controled by the RNLI, pick neaps if possible because theres a fair tide run through here, so not to much fun stepping in and out of the tender,
if you're on a bit of a cruise take a trip up the Torridge to Bideford it's a great run on a summers afternoon/evening around the top of the tide,
there's no pontoon to land on at Bideford only the quay wall but there are a couple of good coffee shops/bar's on or around the Quay worth a quick visit,
The quay dry's out at low water on ALL tides so if you don't want to stay or take the ground make sure you leave in plenty of time to cross the bar no later than 2hours after high water, then head over to Clovelly or Lundy to anchor for the night,
in good weather work on a 4hour window to cross Bideford bar (2hours either side of HIGH water) just keep an eye out for breaking waves coming out of nowhere over "middle ridge" to your starboard,
hi, no most of the estuary dries out at low tide , the main lifeboat stays afloat , but there are no spare moorings at that point , there are no visitors pontoons etc the bigger boats that use the quay at bideford are basicly tied to the walls and also bottom out at low tide . I belive its the same story at ilfracombe , shame really i would quite like to find a harbour on this side with a visitors berth where you can stay afloat on .
My parents lived near there from 1978, (Dad ran the power station until it was mothballed). He had a boat moored just off NDYC and was a keen member there. I remember lugging the dinghy down the slipway.
We made it to Lundy once (it was only a 22' rag boat), left just after HW on the ebb in the morning and back in on the flood in the early evening.
Now both my parents are in the same place in Instow Churchyard, with a view right across the Taw and Torridge estuaries for evermore. It is quite a special place for us - on a nice day !!
Sorry to go off on a bit of a tangent, but we're thinking of doing a quick news story in the next issue of MBY on the plans for a flashy new marina development between Northam and Appledore.
It's proving very controversial with the locals, but I was just wondering whether any of you North Devon boaters had a view?
A new marina would be most welcome, some of us have to stay afloat and also like our creature comforts!
Why would the locals object? Surely jobs would be created and visitors would spend in the local pubs and shops?
Its a long way from Cardiff, Swansea, Portishead, Bristol or Watchet to Padstow so a marina in that vicinity would be ideally placed and would give the gowing numbers of boats in our area (unable to take the ground) somewhere else to go.
hmmm , i only moved here 5 yr ago but some of the chaps at work who are local recon , this has been talked about for years , think ilfracombe has been mentioned somewhere to .
would be nice to have a new place much neeed, gets a bit worrying waiting in the pool at padstow when you need to stay afloat as we got court out in bad weather last year
