The reason I ask is they advertise on Apolloduck.com selling boats sourced in Florida in the U.K. The prices seem competitive but I was wondering how they deal with the RCD classification/registration minefield? I have sent them an email to this effect but, as yet, no reply.

The reason I'm interested is I am changing my boat for a larger vessel for use on inland waterways so a Cat 'D' classification would suffice. I understan it is possible to certify any vessel as Cat D provided they meet certain criteria. If it was possible to import one of these vessels and classify it as Cat D then it would represent a substantial saving for me and others in my position...

Never had any dealings with them, but from their website they seem to deal in new or nearly new motor boats. If the boat is a model that is already being imported into the EU by the manufacturer, then the boat will have type approval already. If that is the case it could be that they are applying for RCD on that basis on any boat they ship, but it is more likely that they are simply acting as shipping agents on your behalf, and as such, you will be regarded as the importer. This will mean that you are responsible for RCD compliance, which if a currently imported model, you should be able to get under the type compliance rules. It will save you a lot of hassle if you have all the manufacturer's brochures and documentation available. It is important to remember that it is not the person who imports the vessel that is liable under RCD, it is the person 'who first puts the vessel into service, or sells it, in the EU' who carries that responsibility.PM me if you want more info.
