Any ideas what this is?

I recently bought a 19 year old Nauticat 35 and found this in a locker, and have no idea what it is. It is about 1250mm long. I am baffled - has anyone got any ideas?

At four feet long? That's a hell of a splice. I wouldn't fancy trying to force all those protruding rings etc down inside a braided cover either.

I'm stumped as to what it really is, though. Best guess is some kind of shorthanded mooring gadget?

Thats my guess too. For threading a rope through the ring.

A clue might be that the boat was used almost exclusively in the Baltic before I bought her - I never got a hand over from the owner so was unable to ask these questions

It's for picking up a stern mooring buoy, they are common here in Finland.

Edited to add, it actually hooks on to the buoy, and is left in place there, it's not for threading a rope.

So that's a spring loaded plunger running down the middle of a tube is it?
