Any idea of the make and name of this boat?

Hi guys

New to the forum :encouragement:

I've recently acquired an old speed boat of which I know very little, what I do know is that its 16ft and built for an inboard, anyone got an idea of what it might be?

My plan is to fit an outboard to give me more space in the back for a couple passengers/fishing etc.

Heres some pics

Thanks guys

I'm now a little wiser :)

I've been offered a yam 30 to go on the back, altho I understand this is way down on power compared to what it used to have but after talking to a few of my boaty friends they think it'll be enough to get it on the plain and move ok. I dont want it super fast :o.

Hi
I think it would have had or still has an inboard engine , Had a few mastercraft ski boats they were fitted with
ford V8 petrol,s

it had a v6 in it before but seeing as I want it as a family jolly boat having an engine in the back taking up all the space isnt going to work. I got the boat free so would like to use it by modifying the back to take an outboard (I've been offered the Yam 30 at no cost).

thoughts good or bad?

It might just get on the plane with 1 person on board and a 30hp, but Im not convinced. There are a couple of companies that do outboard powered skiboat hulls, I know they are slightly larger but they all have a minimum of 200hp.

The other worry is how are you going to mount the engine, the transom was never designed to have force transmitted through it. Fast forward 40 years and hanging even an egg whisk on it could result in that sinking feeling.

Hi pasty and welcome
Sorry to give a negative answer but there is no way that will get over the hump and onto the plane with a few people on board, with just 30 hp. Needs 60 minimum IMHO and that would still be on the small side

Also, as mark says you would need to reinforce the transom. For two reasons - to take the engine thrust and to take the weight of the engine when the trailer bumps over potholes and such like. The loads from the latter can be higher than from the former and the consequences for the car behind you on a fast road are gruesome to think about

You do see 60, 70, 80 hp outboards for sale quite often and good luck with the project

Thanks guys

Mounting the engine I was going to reinforce the transom as I'm pretty good with fibre glass etc, I was going to beef it up with wood, fibre glass or carbon fibre (I have a load of aero grade I was given) rapping around to the sides on the inside with a steel plate on the outside.

I'm a bit sad to hear the 30 wont cut it but I have no funds for this right now, especially enough for an outboard. I've got a 400bhp toyota engine I just took out of my track car.... hmmmmm :)

Defiantly a skip jack as stated before. Fitting an outboard would require a fair amount of fiberglass and possibly other reconstructing. Have you checked if the stringers are solid as it looks from in the photo's like its just been left outside. It's seems like a pretty big project depending on condition. about your Toyota engine if you can get custom water cooled manifolds and heat exchanger i would say why not put it in there as long as you got the shaft or can get one and the rudder but you wouldn't have much space for fishing etc. good luck i'm also currently doing a project boat with the engine your boat used to have the mighty v6 essex:)

Hi

Yeah its been outside for the past 10yrs but I've had a boaty friend have a good look over it and he was surprised how good it is considering where its been.

I was going to start with the transom strengthening today but alas its raining. Its already reinforced where the rudder post ties in so I'm adding/binding in 3/4 inch ply which will then be heavily fibre glassed.

I thought a little update might be good :)

She went in the water mid July and since then she been out many times either fishing, camping adventures, pub runs, did the falmouth tall ships parade of sail, beaching etc etc.

The yam 30 worked out great, even full up with 4 15st men she'll jump on the plane and hit 28knots (she seems to manage 28knots (measured with GPS) no matter what shes got on-board).

Cutting out the transom and reinforcing proved uneventfull, theres no flex, movement or anything, rock solid and been tested pretty hard slamming through rolling sea.

I'm in love with the old girl and very much loving this boating lark :D

I do feel a little out of place on the forum with most having lovely big motor cruisers and then theres me in my little rat boat.... You'll put up with me wont ya? :)

I've got pics from some of our summer adventures if anyones interested, I also have some great pics from the recent Tall Ships parade of sail.

cheers

Steve

Now before I load pics I must add that not knowing whether the boat was going to work as I needed I spent no money getting her in the water, everything was begged or borrowed, cosmetically she is as I dragged her from the hedge... Note the new helm location, the teleflex cables I was given were too short so I mounted the steering in the back :)... altho to start this isnt what I wanted but it makes for a great position in the boat with easy access to everything and its quite nice having passengers up front. And yes those are indeed folding deck chairs I'm using in the back :D, undo a couple retaining brackets and you have instant space.

Once happy she wasnt a sinker we started to venture out, stopping for a swim at a cracking little beach in the mouth of the Helford.

Yet further from home we did many a trip to tremayne quay up the helford, loads of barbies, swimming and even did a few nights camping. Boating with friends and their boats added to the fun.

She spent quite a bit of time parked on the pubs pontoon :)

Ahh 2 stroke, that will help. Just love your "can do" attitude to it all. Pic No5 is a cracker.

Thanks guys

My only goal for this season was to get the boat in the water and test how it would go with an outboard instead of the 3ltr v6 140bhp inboard it had before.

Pretty much everyone I know said it was never going to work well... oh how I laughed as I opened the throttle on her first test run and she sped off across the sea.

This winter I plan to fit her out properly, fender strip, new windscreen, retro paint scheme, create some kind of storage at the back which further ties in the transom and incorporates
those things that lets the water back out when it comes over the back in some conditions (only happened a couple of times so far), fit proper seating front and back and generally make the inside a nicer place.

Oh and of course fit a bigger engine :), to be honest I'm happy with her speed etc as she is but a little more would be nice, I'll be looking for a yam autolube 50 (if not too heavy) I reckon.

cheers
