Antigua

If you want really difficult' customs and immigration folk situated in difficult to access offices try checking in at West Palm Beach in Florida.
YUP The USA takes the biscuit as far as I am concerned.
Made the mistake of thinking of checking out from Antigua at Barbuda. What a dreadful experience, anchored at Long Beach on the west coast; having to cross the lagoon to Codrington, then the search under a blazing sun in a never-ending township for three widely separated offices that were like private houses with no signs of their official capacity.

I guess hurricane Irma put paid to all that now.

My list of unpleasant officials is English Harbour, Anguiila and St John USVIs.
I found the officials in St John, USVI, very courteous. They kindly pointed out that our ESTA VWP authorisations were invalid for arriving in a non-commercial vessel like a small, private yacht and advised:
  • Sail back to where we had departed, Tortola, BVI, and moor at West End harbour.
  • Get the ferry from there back to Cruz Bay, St John, when they would process the ESTA visa exemptions.
  • Get ferry and return to West End, Tortola.
  • Sail back with the yacht and clear in with it, bypassing immigration with our already-processed VWP entries.
Probably contravened a few regulations but they were understanding and helpful, even if it added a few days to our shrinking timetable. I guess it had happened before ...
