some anti-freezes are quite unkind to the marine environment when you flush the engine into the sea.

Anything made with ethylene glycol is nasty. Propylene glycol is less hazardous.

Please make sure there is none left around to attract cats, which like to lick up and then die horribly over several days.

It is possible to get propylene glycol based antifreeze, easily in the US, but all the common ones in the UK are ethylene glycol.

There are two different inhibitor systems. the conventional low silicate system and the long life "organic acid technology" (OAT) systems. The two must not be mixed although it is possible to buy a Universal top up.

AFAIK the Volvo stuff is a conventional low silicate type with no advantage over what you can buy from a motor factors or even Halfords

Its the same Antifreeze that goes in a volvo truck. You can get it from your local volvo truck centre. Part no 1089240 £2.39 per litre last year (concentrate)
You can also get VDS2/3 oil 1161975 £46 for 20 litres Plus Vat of course

I thought some antifreeze was unsuitable for aluminium engines .

Do any boats have alumina bits in their cooling systems ?

We were trying to work out whether we could flush our fresh water system with Radflush and decided to read the manual (TAMD71Bs) where it said in big letters do not flush with chemicals due to aluminium bits!

The single component "Speedflush" may not be suitable but the 2 component "Radflush 2 Part" is stated to be suitable for all engines

Daka:

Anti-freeze has a main purpose of preventing internal corrosion in an engine, its secondary function is preventing feeezing of the cooling system. All engines have dissimilar metals inside them and its this, along with electrical current passing through them which causes corrosion internally.

Think I will stick with the volvo antifreeze, but use there commercial one, thanks for the tip Rin,now to find a supplier,

put your postcode here http://www.volvotrucks.com/trucks/uk-market/en-gb/dealers/Pages/dealer_locator.aspx
Last year I was asked to take a container to put the antifreeze in as the centre I went to had a reservoir of the antifreeze. Call them before you go to check as your truck centre might sell it in 5L containers part no 1089238

Having lost Two cats recently to someone who thought that his vegetable patch was more important than the lives of the kids pets, I have learned quite a bit about it and I can tell you now, if you are THAT bothered get an ultrasonic repelling device for a couple of quid! When a cat or dog ingests A/F it gets into the system within 20 mins, at that point they go blind and appear drunk. This is just about the time they make it back home which causes great upset to the owners, especially kids. This will last about 3 or 4 hours where they appear to make a recovery, their sight returns and they will eat and drink again. This is because the internal organs have dealt with the initial poisioning. However the damage is done and the internal organs will all now fail, Fitting will start and continue on and off for a few hours before they let out their final cry. The only way to save your pet from death is to give vodka, (neutralises the A/F alcohol) but, it should be intravenous and needs to be done ASAP. normally only effective if you actually see the pet drink the A/F. We were told to syringe vodka every hour, but being blind and not being in the mood to be handled I got bitten quite badly, not the playful nip but up to the gums and thrashing around caused some damage, enough that I could not move my hand properly for a week.

So take that thought and remove it from your mind... its certainly no joke!

If you ever did that to my cat, you'd not have a boat left, just a pile of smashed fibreglass.

Now as others have said get an ultrasonic device to deter them. :)
