The SD130 leg on the boat I've just bought has a thick layer of epoxy (I think) on it. A hand sized patch has peeled leaving slightly corroded alloy exposed and I suspect when we attack it a lot more will come off. It has spent all its 5 year life in fresh water but in future will be in salt.
I'm wondering how best to treat it. I was thinking of brightening up with ali oxide abrasive paper followed by etch primer then Primocon or Vinyguard, and then - what?
Does epoxy have any great benefit here?
What a/f is favourite? If it's thoroughly primed/epoxied can you use normal stuff? I know you can't use copper oxide type on exposed ali.
Experience based advice much appreciated!

Most important ... the preparation and coating before the application of antifouling ...... follow the recommendation of a coatings manufacturer diligently.

The result will never be better than the prep and priming.

Usually recommended that an a/f that does not contain cuprous oxide be used. Eg Trilux, as suggested or Hempel Prop-o-drev ???. Although Jotun were saying that their Cu2O based a/f was suitable.

Trilux for antifoul.

Yes wondered about that one thanks.
They say use Interprotect primer which is an epoxy isn't it. For all other surfaces they say Primocon.
Unfortunately looking at International's website, Trilux is not available in Holland which is where the boat is at present!

Yes indeed, but which one?

I think Jotun say their white only for aluminium, and that is copper thiocyanate not oxide. Also not available in Holland. This is turning into a problem. Was hoping to avoid a lift out as soon as back here, the boat is out of water now, wanted to get everything done!
I see Trilux is zinc oxide. (And b***** expensive!)

For my sail drive I use Milledrive or something sounding like that. Its a spray, but how can the x-ray machine differentiate between that
and a can of shave foam? Its not really paint anyway is it?

Sorry cannot help with anything available in Holland....... You did not mention Holland in the original post .. Location = Brighton. I assumed that was the Brighton on the south coast of England

I think you will find that Trilux 33 and Trilux Prop o Drev both contain cuprous oxide. The zinc oxide ( I discover after a bit of Googling ) controls the rate of polishing. It has no biocidal properties

Hempel/ Blakes product is Mille Drive, (Not Prop o Drev as I originally said earlier) No copper compounds in it in the Uk .... Don't think its available in Holland anyway

This may not be awhat you want to hear but IT have a client that has just had the bottom of his yacht copper coated. As he has the same leg as you henasked about a problem as tyhe leg is alu. The company said that they had done this on the same set up on many yachts with no problem because they apply a special epoxy primer before the copper coat. I also have a frien that had this done on his yacht about 8 years ago and he has had no problem with corosion on the leg.

If it were me I would fettle the loose stuff off, apply a good coat of Hammerite Special Metals Primer and over paint with Primucon before anti fouling
I went through the full 3 stage trilux process with Etch Primer, Primucon and Trilux 33 on my sail drive leg with poor results despite stinking the house out in order to meet the temperature requirements.
Every time I use special metals primer I get good results. This is water based so should not be a problem in transit
Best if luck

I had similar problems with my S120 last year. I used Upoxy self etch primer and Trilux. I now realise the importance of an underwater primer as a tie coat as some of the trilux was flaking off. Have just done it again with primocon as a tie coat. The self etch primer was still in good shape when I stripped it all off again!
