We have a alluminium prop on a saildrive and need to take it back to metal. We are thinking of shotblasting it then epoxying, it as each time we are lifted out the antifouling is flaking off. Would we have to prime it before epoxying it. Any views would be welcome.

Am I missing something here? Surely just using the prop will cause the anti-foul to erode/flake off.

antifoul your prop, always thought that was a no no??? galvanic corrrosion, copper and all that?!

You all seem to be telling me not to antifoul my prop but I am not antifouling it with a copper based antifouling. From new the boats prop was epoxied and antifouled with the correct antifouling. I expect the antifouling to flake off whilst in use but wanted to protect the prop with the epoxy and antifouling. I would sooner do this procedure than buy a new prop!!!!!

G'day Stuart,

You can apply an epoxy direct to your prop, the cleaning process should provide a good enough surface key.

However, consider putting some lanoline on applied to the prop when heated so it will get into the alloy.

I hope this helps

I would shot blast it, self etch prime it and then epoxy it, rough up the epoxy a little, then apply the antifoul, should then stay on. IMHO
