I have a boat that goes in the water 3 or 4 times a year in Italy for between 3-6 weeks at a time.
2 years ago when I first took it there I decided to antifoul it when I arrived there rather than do it here. When I went to buy it there it was horrendously expensive compared with here so me being a little bit squeeky decided to use an alternative method.
I only needed to really clean up the hull bottom rather than prevent barnacles so I painted Household emulsion paint that we had lying around the house onto the old scruffy antifouling .
I was terrified that it would turn the sea milky around my boat and I would look like a complete................ . I had the Boat craned in and nothing: I waited a day,two and nothing .
I found that it made the hull look clean , had no ill effects, didnt come off unless scrubbed hard and saved me a few Hundred Euros. The longest it has been in was 6 weeks and after that time,it mildly discoloured,so I wiped it over by hand whilst in the water and it came up clean again. When I hoisted the Boat out again it dried and looked as if I had just painted it. I only did it the once and have used it for the past 2 years like this.
I wouldnt do it to a new Boat though and not if it was moored in the water permenantly........Always makes me and my Wife chuckle
