I have tried Symblast (wanted £250 on top of the £450 fee for the antifouling for the commute)

Peacock shot blasting quoted £850

Blastit in essex quoted £500, i said yet but he then said he cannot do it until end of July at the earliest. He said he knew someone else that can do it but said twice now he would give me the info but has not.

thank you

A scraper, a beach chair to save your back and a couple of days' solitude while you reflect on how much you've saved. I've just done exactly that, launching tomorrow.

Just out of interest, what do their hourly rates work out as? (In my experience, they won't/hate to do it on an hourly rate basis and it's more just a made up number. Seems like quite a good, relatively unskilled business to get into, for basically very little capital).

Did they know how long it would take? Im guessing around £80 per hour with commuting charged at full rates?

Business question rather than technical.

I tried to find someone to share the cost of the commute with once, eg two boats done on the same day, on the same site.

Could it be cheaper done as a casual labouring job for a couple of burly East Europeans? I hate it too, grip becoming too weak.

found a company that can do it within the next couple of weeks. They use crushed glass, whats peoples opinions on that? the person said they will only remove the antifoul leaving the gelcoat intact.

tha company is named after a bird of prey in Chelmford and they say they do many boats at various yards

You could try Richard who is Apollo Shot Blast 07427099068. Mostly as he has his own boat and likes helping with boats, even if that is not his main blast work. He knows his stuff, shields around your boat, so as not to spread the shot too far and I thought he was good value. There is a bit more to it than you may think. Knowing which shot material to use seemed key, we experimented until just the right one worked a treat.

How long do the likes of these guys take to do a boat?

I only know the use of bead blasting from engine part finishing where it leaves a nice matte etched finish, or glass where it frosts it. Or cuts into it if the force/duration is sufficient. I'm assuming crushed is more abrasive. Comparison page, here.

Reading it suggests it will key the surface slightly, for paint to stick more than on a shiny gel coat. I'm interested in how it goes.

How are you going to treat the hull after?

im not sure, apparently my hull had an epoxy cost before to prevent osmosis (years before i got the boat 3 years ago, so unsure how that affects things)

well, i used Falcon Blast from Essex to do the shot blasting using crushed glass. Took approx 4 hours. Most of the hull looks fine.. except there was a thin hairline crack in the gelcoat by the hull anode. so i grounded back today and i was gutted to find it was also below the gelcoat and into the glass, the hairline crack was almost into the inside but it took a quick finger sand to get into the hull as was expecting the hull to be thicker glass. so now i have an area that needs repairing, unfortunately the crack was directly in line with the internal stern cabin bed bulkhead which the battery switches are on. there are no cracks from the anode bolt locations. the crack doesnt run along the full length of the wood, there was no crack visible from inside but its under that wood, the wood is tabbed to the hull. i need someone thats repaired hulls before :( spent so much already on her, feel heart broken, im on furlough too.

Looking at the photographs (after my PM) I think the cause of the crack is the boat being lifted and the strop went over the anode. The loading was enought to crack the hull. My advice would be to move your anode further aft and follow my instructions in the PM.
