Stupid question.... 19' boat, eroding/soft antifoul, how much do I need for a couple of (roller applied) coats??

Seems to be sold in 750ml/2.5/5ltr tins.. guessing 750 is too small...?? 2.5 might last me two seasons???

...not bought any before, usually use leftovers... :D

My 34`(11.00m) motor cruiser used exactly 1 x 2.5 ltr for one coat.So I guess the same should approximate for your 2 coats.

Can't you remember how much leftovers you usually use? :)

Pete

Do you know, I've never ever looked... must be getting old..... but usually they came in partially filled tins (my sis used to work for a boatyard and got me leftovers).... sometimes I just mixed them together.....

mhph/northwind - thanks for that - 2.5l sounds spot on

I can just about spread 750 cm³ out on my Sea Wych but is not enough.... When the tins were 1 litre that was fine.

i'd guess a Fantasie take a little more than my Sea Wych
If you buy a 2.5 litre tin you will have enough for two coats and maybe have little left.

I use Cruiser UNO , that comes in 750 and 3 litre tins. A 3 litre tin is not much more to buy that 2 X 750cm³ tins so a much better buy

International used to have a calculator for how much antifouling you needed for various boat lengths and keel configurations in their painting guide. It might still be on their website.

The table in their 'Boat Painting and Product guide' only goes down to 6.1m. waterline length for keellboats which it claims requires 3 litres so the OP will have 'leftovers' from his 2.5 litre tin. My experience is that if you have two good coats on areas within a foot of the waterline, the keel and rudder and above the propwash, the deep dark areas underneath need only a coat, if even that.
The formula they give above the table is LOA X Beam x .85, divided by coverage, multiplied by number of coats.

2.5L does 2 coats on my Froloc 18 (18ft6" loa, 8 ft beam) with just a tiny bit left over.

ProDave you and I probably have the most similar boats known to man... :)

Next, and I appreciate this is a length of string question, anyone have any preferences for which antifoul for Chichester Harbour mud (drying) mooring??? I'm leaning towards Hempel Tiger Extra at the moment...

The best choice may depend upon the area of the harbour in which you moor.

Ask people mooring the same area what they have found to be effective.

I use now use UNO at Prinsted.

I'm on a 3/4 tide mooring in chichester and use Hemel tiger extra, works well.

It is one of the Ancient Laws of the Sea that antifouling always requires slightly more than a whole number of tins of the stuff. This is independent of the size of the tin.

I used International bottom coat last year (and will again this year as I bought 2 tins when on offer)

The part of the boat that settles in the mud at low tide, on lift out, had a good crop of small barnicles. So it appears settling in the mud had eroded just about all the antifoul before the end of the season. The parts above the mud line were clean.

So I too am interested to find out what's best for a boat on a drying mud mooring.
