Antares 760 - early days

Wastegate was checked last year and it was not jammed. I am going to check all the linkages to ensure getting full movement.

As for red diesel I think its about 70p but we cant use it here in Ireland (officially).

Hi Jamie,
I am fairly certain my prop is as original so should be correct but can check soon when it goes back for lift out and seacock resealing job. The turbo is an unknown but I did consider fitting a simple boost gauge but not sure where to connect. Do I have to drill and tap a hole for this do you know?

what engine do you have ?

There is something odd going on, if your gearbox ratio is anything like mine you should be seeing 18+kn@3200rpm. Photo from last year but performance the same, 16.1kn@3000rpm.

It's a Nanni 4.390. It started to steam heavily at end of delivery voyage and we have been sorting it ever since as it would not accelerate past 13kts so not planing. Starting delivery voyage and on the sea trial didn't have any issues. Bottom was clean at the time pre delivery. Fuel was filled up. All the work done since has got me another 1 knot! I will take actual readings when I get out again for comparison.

Volvopaul recently cleaned out a lot of corrosion from the exhaust elbow on my 41p and it’s made a huge difference to the amount of steam coming out the exhaust. I swear it runs smoother/quicker too but that doesn’t make sense as it was never overheating anyway (although I guess the exhaust was). Might be worth checking for the steam issue at least.

Mine steams, always has since I’ve had it. The exhaust elbow is ‘on the list’ for this winter, although I don’t know whether it was cleaned or even replaced when the turbo was changed 2/3 years ago. Exhaust running at 49c@3000rpm so not really hot.

I was surprised at the difference it made.

The Nanni has a crankcase breather pipe fitting integrated into the air filter assembly so this won't work on mine. I have to find an adapter to bolt on with a pipe takeoff and spigot for the filter. Or cut off the air filter itself and fit the rubber filter connector directly onto the cut pipe which is a bit brutal.

The black pipe going into the back of the air filter is a breather, I just drilled a small hole to accommodate it. I’d rather find another solution to be honest, feeding crappy air back into the turbo doesn’t thrill me.

Thanks for the K&N tip, will have a look into that - any little increases in performance are welcome (y)

When you drilled the hole did you just do it through the middle of the black end cap on the filter and push the pipe in (no sealant or anything)?

Yes, 3mm hole iirc. It’s a good tight fit so no leakage or movement. The K&N is 40 odd quid but washable and reusable so should work out cheaper in the long run.

I've been sail orientated most of my boating years but have taken the plunge and now am a proud owner of a 2006 Antares 760 with a Nanni 4.390 200hp diesel.
Plymouth to Gosport Friday to Sunday with stays in Brixham and Portland and all went well. Fairly pleased with the performance and fuel consumption at 13-16 knots GPS (except harbours, scenic bits and bumpy bits) tide assisted virtually all the time.
Total 10hrs motoring using c160 litres = c16 litres per hour. Edit: omitted the hours Plymouth - Brixham so total hours was 15 using c160 litres = 10.7 litres per hour which seems very good!

Congratulations on your new boat. By coincidence we have recently completed the purchase of a 2005 Bene 9 also located in Plymouth. We too will be bringing it back to Gosport, but we haven't been able to do so yet as we are waiting for a berth to become available at Royal Clarence. We're planning on a stop at Brixham and then the rest in one hop if we can with Portland/Poole being our fallbacks if we have poor weather. Our Bene has a single D4 225; not yet been able to work out fuel burn but hope to do so when we next take the boat out for a run. I think we'll burn a bit more than 11l/hr; nearer 20I/hr I reckon for a reasonable mid-teens cruise, looking at the VP fule burn graph. Enjoy!

Congrats AdeOlly, coincidence as you say! I'm on a dry berth contract at Premier Gosport, with an arch on the saloon she's too high for the rack so she's on the ground which I prefer.
Very pleased with the boat and the Nanni 4.390 purrs along beautifully 22kts flat out and I'm cruising easily at 12-14.
One problem, crud at the bottom of the tank led to part-block of the primary filter and poor performance, easily rectified with a filter change. To be sure I had the tank filtered and cleaned with an inspection hatch fitted. Crud was evident at the bottom of the tank but it is in very good condition and now sparkling clean.
