I've just had a letter from Dickies telling me that my boat does not comply with 'current standards' and they need access to my boat for:
i. Drilling a hole in a fuel compartment wall.
ii. Blocking this hole with a plug labelled with its purpose.
iii. Fitting additional vents.

Apparently the hole is needed to allow a fire extinguisher nozzle to be poked into the tank compartment and the additional vents to allow more ventilation of the fuel compartment.

The letters ends asking me to pass the letter on to a new owner, if I have sold it.

So, if you have a second-hand Antares 650 expect a call from the old owner, but if he has lost contact or interest, it may be a good idea to speak to your local Beneteau dealer to have this work done at Beneteau's expense.

Full marks to Dickies for acting on the recall, but they don't mention if there is a cost attached to it, not that that bothers me as the work is safety related.

I'd guess that there won't be a cost, that'll be picked up by Benneteau. I'd further guess that the work needs carrying out because it would have been a requirement for CE rating that slipped through.

The BtO 650 is equivalent to the Merry Fisher 625?
It may be worth owners of the equivalent boat from Jeanneau finding out if theirs is effected as both boats were built on the same production line.

There is definitely a difference between the based around the position of the lazarette lids, but can't recall how the position of the fuel tank differs or otherwise.

Be worth asking your local Jeanneau dealer just in case.

We also had a letter this morning from our Beneteau agent. Mentioning the same as your letter with regards to the vents etc but ours is the 6.80 model and is only 4 months old.

My wife spoke to Dickies and as far as I know the recall cost is covered by Beneteau.

Im assuming that it must be for those with outboards and onboard petrol tanks.

I believe the fuel tank is slightly further forward on the Merry Fisher, which is better than the Antares as it too much weight when full, but the access hatch on the Jeanneau is cunningly placed so that you have to lower the seats to get into the 'cellar'.

If it helps, the letter says the Hull number is 148, which I assume is a design number.

I suspect that the 148 is your boats build number (she is number 148 of this model to have been built).

Going from what Matt says it seems like there may be a common fault / design error / change to CE regs across several boats in the Beneteau (and therefore probably Jeanneau) range.
It does sound like an extremely straight forward fix that will be done at no cost I am sure.

We must own the same Boat as my Hull No. according to the letter from Dickies is 148 also ???????????????

LOL!
Not sure then as a Hull identification number, known as the HIN, now more commonly called a Craft identification number, CIN, is as unique as a VIN on a car.

My HIN, or CIN is 12 characters long, but it does contain 148 somewhere in the middle, so I assume the Hull Number 148 is the design number.

Major beat me to it, but arrived at the same conclusion. 148 must be the design number. My HIN is the same format as the Major's.

Okay, all that needs doing now is for you to invite them in to bore some holes in your boat and report back when the job is done.

Once you've done that, I'll decide if I want someone boring random holes in mine. :p

Something like:

PL IRI E2148B505

PL is the country of build. PL = Poland
IRI... never worked out what that bit means
E2 I would guess would be the model of boat
148 would normally be the build number of that model
B5 is the month and year of build with B being February
05 is the model year

14 characters if you include the PL for Poland. if the Hull build number - 148 - and the month and year is correct, then I have four letters and a number (lllln) left over as possible unique identification.

PL lllln148G405 but as two of the letters are BE in sequence which I assumed meant Beneteau, leaving only two letters and one number as unique.

Bamboozled now!!!! LOL!

Tee hee.

Just need DIW to test the water with the amount of mess the mod takes and my work is done here.

Could be some time !!!!!!!!! just learnt from Dickies that they have sent the warranty request to Beneteau for the parts ?? and they are unsure on delivery time scales. What will the freight charges from Le France be for 'a hole' LOL.

That part will be quite pricey as it now has to come from Poland and the cost of transport will be high. Luckily the labour cost to manufacture a hole is quite cheap so that should counter the shipping extras...

At least they are looking into it. :)
