I wonder if the 'Contact' was the ship that used to come regularly to
Colchester to pick up a cargo full of sewage.
It used to have a nickname that was linked to what it was carrying.
Any ideas ?
No, the 'Contact' was if I remember correctly one of the substitute vessels on the Colchester/Delfzyl regular run. There were two coasters that regularly did this 'liner service' run twice a week, the 'Ahoy' and the 'Roerborg'. When one of them was off in Dry Dock or temporarily out of commission, then 'Contact' was one of the substitute coasters bought in to fulfill the needs. Hard to think that these two ships were covering this run twice a week every week throughout the year, and all of a sudden the port shuts and the business moves on...
The effluent carrier you are thinking of is the old 'Errwood' that I think I am right in saying started her working life as a wine tanker!!
