Another VHF post.

I've only given the CG one passage plan, and that was for a passage in less than ideal conditions along a relatively exposed coast (the west coast of Mull). There was no shore contact I could leave details with; we were in a mobile phone shadow, and were anchored in Bull Hole, an almost uninhabited anchorage. They asked us to let them know when we reached Tobermory, which we duly did. Under the circumstances, both my crew and I felt it was a wise precaution. Of course, all went well and we had no drama, but we might have!

Recently have forgotten to close my TR on 2 occasions and only remembered many hours after my ETA while sitting In the pub. Have phoned the relevant CG, feeling very embarrassed, but they have taken it in a very casual manner. Apparently it happens a lot! Perhaps it's as well they don't act on every overdue passage!

I've had a similar conversation with an off-duty coastguard, and in fact what he said "happens a lot" is that people radio in a passage plan and are never heard from again. Which, by his take, was why they take not a blind bit of notice of them, other than jotting them in the log.
